what does gates and limiters do for drums and what are some good hardware pieces to buy mater of fact whats best hardware or software

Well Gating drums and Compressing em is good for this cause:

If you hit, for example, a compressor on the drumpatterns it will make the drums unify.
It'll make em sound more like they come from the same source rather then chopped up samples of drums put together, ya know.

Will make the whole drumpattern unify in ONE caracteristic sound. And that's what you strive for in music.
It should sound like an entity not chopped up bits and pices sticking to the eardrums like a collage.
