Yep but what Kris fails to also say is that "they wish they had back then, the money that is out there now". Madd money was made back then but the labels kept 95% and only let 5% trickle down to the artist. And that's only if they did all the writing and producing themselves. Music in the beginning days of hip hop ("for the labels") was the most lucrative time. Yes people wanted to get on for diff't reasons than the youth today. It is money driven but lets be real! Them dudes knew they were not going to get mega rich from rapping or producing. It did give them fame and stature within the hip hop community though. That, and the ability to have a little bit more than everybody else in the hood drove them. If they were dishing out the money back then that some are being dished now I'm 199% sure KRS would have taken it!

I'm sorry but I can't get mad at artist and producers today going after the money first. Hell, no people have been fucked by the music industry more than people or color. From soul music to RnB to rock n roll to Jazz to Hip Hop....all started off with the main participants getting royally screwed while the labels became extremely fat cats.

You can hear old retired sports figures speaks this way all the time. They did this more, they did that more or better but got paid less.

I'm a firm believer that when a person speaks of "the money they didn't get" it's because they wish they had.

MONEY IS NOT THE ROOT TO ALL EVIL...IT'S THE LOVE OF IT!

Just my 12 and half cents!

True words from the Teacher. Didnt really need him to spell it out tho, the writings been on the wall for quite some time now.

Heres one of the illest spokenword joints Ive heard KRS do in a long time, this shit is bonkers.

I'm an old school KRS fan but I gotta admit I lost a lot of respect for him when he went at Nelly on some bullshit. He basically singled out a kid that was at the top of the game at the time for controversial reasons.

He can "preach and teach" but to go after others because they don't do or move like you'd like them to is not cool. Attacking the hear and now is no way to get them to listen or respect your opinions. If he really wants to reach and teach the youth he might want to find another way. The youth are rebels by nature...he was no diff't when he first got in the game.

How long did he and bridge go at it over some "we started this first" bullshit? Don't think for one minute mad people didn't get busted up during that period. Violence was prevalent. Don't be so "holier than thou" when you're older is all I'm saying.

I really dont see how he was being "holier than thou" by making the observations he did upon the current state of the industry - to me they were dead on, but i guess that makes me a hater as well doesn't it.

Whats interesting to me is - what youll see commonly from anyone coming from a money stance is a bunch of "oh hes being a hater" remarks. Some people truly are haters, but its become waaay too easy for people nowadays to cop out with this statement. The same thing could be said about you if your calling KRS a hater, the shits just played out now.

Im all for people making money if they can and more power to em if they do amount to something financially while at the same time making great music, but the common trend that I think KRS was acknowledging is that the harder you strive to make money as your number one goal versus making real music is where the music begins to actually suffer - and i gotta totally agree with that.

It's just a topic of discussion. He does at time sound salty though. No way he's reaching the youth like that. If you have kids you know this to be true. U have to find away to talk with them instead of talking to them.

I don't know if you've ever lived in the ghetto, that is who he's usually trying to speak too, I know for a fact around my way that if you come at these kids on some "I know what's best for you shit" they ain't trying to hear it. If all u do is point out how fucked up they are and how there doing everything wrong and are fucking up the industry they'll do the complete opposite of what you'd like them to do.

Just respect your elders man...thats what men do. But if you wanna get paid you can't continue to make raw hip hop. Thats all he's saying. We all know what the love of money leads to...corruption. And thats what happened...they started to pay us more for dumbing down our shit....and we fell for it because we got tired of making the record companies rich...so we said o.k. I'ma get this doe because thats what brings power and success. I like money and nice shit just like the next man...but staying true to yourself also makes you feel strong inside.

Word, but KRS doesnt soley speak on how things are fucked up, he really shows both sides of the coin usually, this particular video exposed possibly a more biased standing but from the stuff Ive heard him spit he's pretty neutral to both sides of the game while at the same time making valid observations of whats going on around us - thats why people look up to him so much as public speaker and emcee, because he speaks real shit but still stays positive. Positivity seems to always be the minority unfortunately so we have to fight for it a lot more. Its much easier to be negative.

And in regards to who he speaks to generally, i dont see why he would only want limit his voice to one narrow demographic such as innercity ghetto kids even though hes obviously speaking to them too. Seems to me, he wants everyone and anyone to hear what hes got to say, i kno i would if i were him.

I mean, I come from the poorest part of my city and my folks still live there, but i dont think that really holds any merit in regards to receiving the messages hes sending since i think it really depends on your mindstate towards the rap game more then anything else.

My 2 pesos...

You hit some good points. Its true when your in a different seat the cat making the money doing less work and putting less effort into it.

Its sad really. Just know the hustle so you dont become the one who gets hustled.
alot of peole do it everyday...its called going to work reporting to the boss. The employee always does more and gets paid less...and in most cases has the most knowledge about the job itself. Once you get inside the music industry and sign with a label...you can't stop the rape. See KRS-1 dont gotta sell over a million records to get paid. These artist nowadays get pennies off the multiplatinum selling album...while KRS-1 gets like roughly $4 every album sale through KOCH....so basically he gets probably a lil more money than these lil new cats out here wearing rented ice and driving cars thats recoupable by the label.

word. I feel that.

The whole Nelly thing was stupid, but from what I hear it was more then just the song.

I feel what the man is tryin to say. i feel 100% the way he does. Are you kiddin, why would he be salty, homeboy could go and do a track wit 50 (which is somethin i hear 50 wants but KRS wont do) and find a whole new demographic. It's a shame that cats make assumptions when someone is keepin it 100. I think Skid even mentioned it in another thread about how "keepin it real" turned to "hatin'".

One thing about KRS is he speaks the truth. He aims to get people to empower themselves by studying and gaining a brain to reason with. He tries to teach an untaught history, he speaks to so many more people than just the hood kids. He tried to use hiphop as a community as a platform for change.
I have the utmost respect for KRS, hes been in the game a very long time, and he taught me some world truths when I was still a spotty faced ignorant teenager myself.
Also...
How much money someone is making is no measure of quality.
Damn Bill Gates is raking in the dough, does that mean he can rap?

50 and KRS on a record would be horrible! What the fuck they gone rap about? It's good that KRS said no, and I don't know what fitty was thinking asking.

The Nelly shit was about his music. Kris was down grading dudes shit in a forum like these vids that are posted. Nelly responded back with one of his biggest tracks to this day, that "I am number one joint". A moderator, Russel simons I thin, eventually helped to squash the beef.

Which kind of proves my point. Kris went about the shit the wrong way...when it started getting out of hand it was mediated and instead of Kris talking to or about Nelly he talked with Nelly.

See u guys want to paint me in a box. I'm not saying that what KRS says isn't 98% valid. It's the way he goes about it. He'll change his tone depending on the audience. If he's getting mad claps and "amens" from the audience he'll dig deeper.

I love to hear KRS speak it live. I feel what he says but I also fuck with these kids down here on a daily and certain approaches don't work with them.

But anyway, I'll let yall have this! One one one one ONE!
