The Source magazine founder and co-owner Dave Mays recently announced that the publication was supporting Reverend Al Sharpton's effort to ban violent artists from radio for 90 days.

Just last week, Sharpton revealed that he spoke with Radio One, Clear Channel and Emmis Communications regarding his call for radio stations to ban artists who commit violence for 90 days.

"It is inspiring to see that Rev. Al Sharpton is speaking out against the crisis of corporate manipulation of violence in the Hip-Hop industry, which is benefiting the bottom line of a few major conglomerates," Mays said in a statement.

Mays also stated that The Source didn't approve of the censorship of artists, but is opposed to rappers using violence to hype up their record sales. Like Mays, Sharpton says he respects the artists' right to express themselves. He specified that the ban targets artists that are involved in acts of violence and not artists whose content deals with violence.

Dave Mays is hilarious. After making millions from these 'violent artists' which he puts on the front of his magazine every month, this lil harvard bitch now wants to ban them. What a fucking hypocrit.

well its really no different from the violent artists themselves who make 15 mysogonistic, violent songs and then do the obligatory god/keep your head up/heal the world type songs at the end...
*ahem* dmx..........

hypocrite? no more then the said artists he sells units with.

but at the same time...

lets view this objectively. for one, its not a permanant ban, only a 90 day moritorium on what would amount to be a VERY small handful of artists. name me one high profile major commercial artist who has been personally involved in committing a malicious act of violence... young buck... g unit artist, signed to 50's g unit records, who is under shady records, ran by...... eminem.

wow. young buck wont get radio play for 3 months. like hes gettin maad rotation anyways, right?

this is more fluff and farce then anything, a mere illusion. my guess is we wont see the 50's and Games of the world pulled from airwaves. perhaps beanie sigel..... seriously though, these numbers are small, unless they go after every dude with a sheet.

I think he doesnt really care; he just heard something inspirational and it touched his heart. Then he made a move based on emotion. It'll be over soon. I dont understand how he is associated with all this beef/violence/"gangsta" rap and even in his product, The Source (which makes his money), then turn around and say no violence. And I dont think you can compare this situation to how an artist makes a few songs because this is now playing with other people's money. This move doesn't just affect him, it affects the artist, the label, radio, etc.
