Anybody who got one of these or used one before,

How hard is it to use for a whole track by itself. I heard of easy mo bee usin just a couple 1200s linked up for his whole setup. I just wanna get the facts straight before i look into this more.


Also,

whats some of the pros and cons of it to an 2kxl (im just usin the xl as an example). I know it has mad low sample time, but other then that.

I have done plenty of tracks with just an sp1200. Running two together just allows you to use more samples. However, you can use longer samples cuz the longest a sample can be is 2.5 seconds. He is chopping longer samplers up into 2.5 second increments so he can flip them. The sequencer and sound are tight in the SP, it would be easy to make a beat but it would definitely be a boom bap beat. I use an SP1200 with an eps-16+ so I am more versatile.

yeah i use solely the sp1200... i love it but the 10 seconds is gettin a little old... sometimes i dump down into logic and the fill it back up again but it is alot of time to do all that... having 2 is dope... my homeboy brought his over once and that is super tight.. but unless your a big fan of the sound it aint for everyone..

I really want somethin i can use by itself or use with my eps once in a while.
So far the only things i really been thinkin bout are the ASR-X and the MPC1K. I love the 1k. Theres so many options in it for how big it is. I dont like how clean the sound is, but its alright. The asr-x is nice, but its nothin i dont have right now and the sequencer i dont like.
I gotta find somebody with an sp so i can try it out.

thats funny cause my first shit was a 16+ and i had both of them together for a short time... the sp1200 would be good for you... i used to hate programming my drums on the 16+... the combination is good... yo FT you ever have probs midi'ng them up? or how do you do it... cause i didnt have manuels for it back then so i was limited to how much i could get runnin as far as both peices together, and i noticed that just sync starting them the bpms were just a hair off... nah mean? .. how do you run your combo?

I have owned both of these piece and they are nice...just a lack of sample time and oh on the ugly Blue SP12 ( I sold it to Drumatic another member in Philly, he's always up on Beat Society).....you gotta use ya 5 1/4 disk drive to load samples....upside is it remembers samples you loaded when you turn it off and on....one more thing is that the most important asset to these pieces are outboard processing gear....Mixer with direct outs and EQ....that will go a long ways....I only parted with mine because they a nice size pieces and if you don't use em everyday they just boat anchors.....but if you think that 2k has low sample time then you probably shitting using the sp's.......I never owned the 2kxl just 2K and the 3000, but I think when I fully upgraded my 2k it never hit the ceiling for any of the tracks I did....but on the SP's you will have to get very clever such as speeding up your sample to fit more time into the sp....then play it back at a lower octave....there's lot of tricks to the SP.....imagine if your software only was limited to like 8 or 16 Megs of memory...you would very press.....the SP's had much less memory like 512k or 1Meg full I think....

the sp 1200 comes with 10 seconds sample time and a built in normal disc drive... the oldest sp12 only has 5seconds of sample time and you have to rig it up yourself with one of those old ass floppy discs the big ones.. only one i ever seen hooked up and working was a commodore drive... so definately dont get the sp12 cause basically you cant save nothin in it or would have to record it out and then clear the memory to start over, ive know a couple cats to try and hook up an old floppy drive to it and they could never get it to work... but the sp1200 already has the normal smaller disc (3"?) or whatever built in so you can save your beats and shit...

I just got an SP12 on ebay for $200. It dont have a drive with it, but itll be at my house in a couple weeks.

I can work with 5 seconds. The EPS16 only got 11 secs. Ill just use the SP for drums. EPS for samples.

Even if i dont like it, i can still sell it for $150 more.


Im just gonna have some trouble findin the kind of disks that i need. Theres plenty of them commodore 1541 5.25" drives on ebay for $5. I can get one of them once i start savin shit on this.

no shit. thats a good as deal yo.. dont sell it your lucky to have for reals.... but yeah you can fit alot of drums on there anyways.. 5 seconds goes alot further than you think... at least 2 full kits and a couple extra shakers or whatevs... thats a good combo mos definate.. you should expand the memory for the 16+.. when i had mine it had at least a couple minutes of time i think.. i never ran out of time on it

i dont even know if its got the 5 second memory yett. It might have the 1.2 secs memory right now.

The guy i got it from said he got it from his uncle and he dont even know what it is.



I know that 5 seconds is a lot of time. You should hear some of the shit i done on my eps with only half of my memory.
A lot of people right now couldnt even make a beat off of 20 seconds of sample time. I think thats wack.




How much does the 5 second (TURBO) upgrade go for right about now?
Some fact page on Emulator-Archive Site said that its $700 or sometin. I dont know if thaats what its like when it came out or what, but i sure as hell aint payin 700 for 4 more seconds of sample time.

The way i work is to slave the sp1200 to the eps. I have the beat done first, usually, so by slaving the sp it becomes my metronome for the eps. Now invariably i will need to move a drum sound or sounds around to accent the bass which i use eps for 75 perecnt of the time, or for fills. Then i switch the sp to internal sync, edit in step sequence cuz its quick, switch back to slave and im off. I use the sp for drums, single bass plucks, and sample that i want ot have the sp sound. I use the eps for bass, guitar, piano, and longer loops.

Another thing ill do is sample sp bass lines into the eps to flip, loop effect. i never py sp sounds un the eps or vice versa via midi. what i like to do is slave sp to eps, play the beat in sequence mode not song, and play the beat live by muting fading the sounds on boths machines on the fly, i can change sequences on them as well. it gives a live feel an i resequence on the pc later any way.

Backwards, the eps sequencer is controlling the beat already created in the sp. You can do it the other way but i find it easiest for me since i use the sp as my drummer, and eps as more melodic instruments.

yo the one you have has 5 seconds on it for sure... it probably has sounds already in it which you can erase to start out with a fresh 5

Thats dope. I was thinin about how i would use 1.2 seconds of sample time.

I read about 1.2 somewhere. They might mean that 1.2 per pad.

I dont wanna have somethin this big and expensive, and only use it to put drums through. Im gonna learn how to use the sequencer and use it by itself, just to get some experience or in case i meet up wit somebody who got one. But oince ive mastered the SP as a standalone, i will go back and use it with the EPS controlling it.

But im not just gonna sample shit into it then load it into the EPS. Im just really against the way you like to do it. Id rather midi it up.
