You need to understand what ADSR are.
Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release. That is the starting point.
Also read the help within reason for some ideas on how they work.
The matrix is just a mono sequencer that sets notes for the subtractor or any other instrument to play.
Its good for creating arpegio's.
I dont even know how to use thor yet, I just twiddle knobs and listen if I like the results..

That not true about the Matrix
You can use it control things like filter cutoff or any of the other parameters by using the CV curve

Just Tweaking the knobs will only get you so far
Say you were adjust the LFO or Mod envelope
It may not make any change to the sound if you don't know you have amount knob turn up past zero
