I am just trying out the poll posting option to see if this new showcase format can work....

This is a limited example of what I am trying to suggest for the new Showcase format. Unfortunately you can't assign individual ratings for certain individuals so I can't give Beatz101 a rating of 10 and then give Fade a 7.

But this format still might work because instead of seeing a big fat "3" rating on your work you could just tell your beat needs work because only 3 out of 30 voters gave you a rating of 8 or higher. And then people can leave detailed feedback of they want but this way at least you get a quick representation of what kind of response your beat is generating.

The other limitation is you can only do 10 entries at a time.

Everyone should vote so you can see how the poll changes and shows the response, just guess since there are no actual beats to hear.

Having a value attached to your beats "Hotness" doesnt provide for much constructive criticism.
It doesnt tell you if a bass is too loud or the drums dont bang right or if a melody sounds wrong. It doesnt tell you where you need to improve. It just basically tells you how "hot" people think your beat is overall.

Well, something good is always better than nothing... even if it's just your level of hotness.

i think it would be cool to have a "list" of the beats ... sometimes its a pain the ass opening up two pages to review .. one to type and the other to check the thread .. sometimes u can miss somebody or accidently erase ur reviews before they post... if somehow we could link all our beats in a common spot .. that would be cool.. in other words it would be like

relic - (link to beat)
stress -(link to beat)
classic -(link to beat)
afrique- (link to beat)

and so on..

maybe u could even set it up so that its at the top of every page in the showcase so its real easy to get to the music. it would aslo make it harder to miss people, and u can easily call out cats who arent giving feedback cuz all the beats are right there in one place. the only challenge would be to fade to design a system where u could link put ur name and the link and it would show up in list form like that..

also we should limit the showcase to one beat per person.. i cant stand when muthafucers give a list of ten beats to review. shit is gay.

Annnnd, please dont put all your feedback and everything in your first post, Its hard to see if someone reviewed or not when everyone else is posting chronologically and 3 of us just use one post I have done this in the past and I know we dont wanna clutter up the thread but its easier , imo to find if there has been a response if there is more than one post.

We aren't getting that kind of feedback now as it is. Like Sygma says, something is better than nothing. But I agree with you, more feedback would be desired. So instead of a single rating of the tracks overall appeal, you can have five scores like this:

Ominous Red - Beat 103
Overall Hotness - 8
Drums - 8
Melody - 9
Balance - 7

But displayed graphically like the poll bars.

You would have to submit your beats in advance..so a poll wont work.

Sure it would. At the end of each Showcase, you could have a deadline and you'd have to email your beat to he moderator, who could set up an illmuzik radio feed for that week of the showcase. Say the deadline is Friday, the illmuzik radio show is ready by Monday.

Exactly. That's where an embedded flash player could come in. All 15 tracks right there in the player for you to hear back to back.

^^ im not too sure about the embedded flash player tho .. what i was referring to was just having the links in one place.. no need to upload anything or have a player.. and you could still post whenever u felt like it.. but just a system where instead of posting in the thread u just posted ur link to your beat and it would show up on the list(in the order that u posted) .. and people would be limited to one beat/song per showcase. Its actually pretty simple and im sure fade could make something like that .. it sounds easy enough in my head at least. the way it would look would be similar to this poll actually .. the name of the individual, with the link right next to it. just so all the beats are in one place. u could hop in at any time, as long as the showcase is open just like it is now, but it would just be more organized and easier to cycle through the beats without having two or three screens open at once and switching back and forth. Sometimes its just a pain in the ass rummaging through 3 or 4 pages of showcase to get to hear all the beats. if they were limited to one location, it would be like 10 times easier.

ok picture the same style box that is in this poll.

except u would have three places to enter information

artist/producer: (ash holmz)

title: (i love getting head)

link: (www.ashneedsbrain.com/ilovehead.mp3)

u would fill in those three spaces, then hit submit:

when the screen refreshed u would see ur name on the list with the title of the beat next to it.. when u click the title it just opens up whatever link u provided

and the list would obviously go from first poster to last.

simple. and i think it would make the showcase alot better and the review process MUCH faster and less confusing. It also somewhat in diffrent way brings back the competition factor because all the name are right there next to each other...

edit: u could even have a fourth box called "comments" or something like that where u could right a quick note. ie "beat i did yesterday for a new artist..etc"

This is another idea, and the best one I got so far.

Since the coding for a page that allowed a mass poll is very complicated, and possibly impossible, we should have a Beat Review week. Each member post 1 new beat poll a month on the first of the month. So YES..... we will have an ass load of polls but here's the catch. You have to give a review to everyone who have you a review. If you don't, your poll is deleted. This will encourage everyone to review each other's shit. And since you could only put up one beat a month, it would cut down on the "10 beat submissions at a time" type posts.

It would be for one week only and that would give everyone a week to listen to everyone's shit and give some feedback. This was you could get the poll to work graphically. And for that week, instead of posting up a bunch of bullshit like I normally do, I'd focus on giving and receiving reviews.

This is what it would look like:

I recommend follow a similar pattern to Beat This, anyone who wants to be in the showcase, have a deadline to upload your beat to one of the mods one day before the showcase, they can then post them all from the ill server so people can listen to all ten or fifteen at one clip and give feedback to all.
That method also prevents the people who post on the last day of the showcase from getting no reviews.
If you do it that way, make it weekly so people can upload beats by Sunday at 5PM and every Monday at 5PM they're up on the server...

Sounds like a good idea, not too complicated to acheive.

no offense but the whole post in advance thing sounds kinda gay to me. I mean when i post in the showcase its more like im cruising around the site and happen to see the showcase open rather then im up the night before anticipating the showcase to open lol... im mean cmon ... its illmuzik not the NY lottery ...and also whats preventing someone from posting in advance then when the showcase comes not giving any feedback? .. matter fact i know i would prolly simply forget that i had submitted anything lol..

not to put myself on the pedestal but i think my idea is the best one. its the simplest to use, and simplest to implement. I dont know code, but it cant be that complicated to write a code that would do what i just described in my above post. its just moving basic info from one place to another. nothing fancy, and it doesnt fuck with the current formula too much

It is the simplest to use and implement but I don't see how this would inspire feedback. That was Sanova's issue in the first place. Sure, the thread would be a whole lot more organized with all the music right at the beginning of the thread, but you'd still have people posting beats and then not giving other people feedback. Or maybe like 3 people getting feedback and the rest get neglected.

Maybe it would help if there was a section where anybody was allowed to open up a topic to show there new work which would help in giving more detailed feedback, rather than everything always being locked into one topic - same with the '' Flip Sample '' section , plus if something similar like that was made it would get things abit more active in those sections imo.

I haven't seen this work on any forum or website.

What happens is people post a thread saying HEY CHECK ME OUT.... and then they don't leave any feedback for anyone else. And they are often ignored. So if I started a thread saying CHECK OUT MY SH*T.... I doubt anyone would even click on the thread. I see it happen all the time in other forums.

^^^^^ yeah but it would also make it easier to call out cats not giving feedback.. u cant make someone give feedback.. but u can call them out on it ... for example if if I reviewed beats 1,2, 6, and 8,. anybody could see that purposely I skipped the other cats so they can directly call me out as to why they were skipped or whatever..... there are no excuses when the beats are laid out in order....its so easy to enforce ...shit u could prolly even include a feature where a mod could block someone from using the system if they consistently provide 0 feedback. Put their account on "hold" or something like that until next showcase provinding they give feedback.. but i dont think that would be neccesary with that type of system because it would run itself. if its clear that someone never gives feedback, evryone is gonna notice cuz its so easy to see.

basically....... making it simpler cant make it worse .. but making it complicated would turn off headz from participating in the first place. the two biggest reasons why people dont leave feedback is lack of time, or they dont give a fuck.. u cant do anything about the people that dont give a fuc... no matter how u do it some cats still wont leave feedback. but u can defitneltly cut down on the time required to review other peoples shit... but a catergorized system would make it even MORE confusing as to what a particular producers problem may be imo. U cant really check off stuff when it comes to art. some shit is sonically terrible but its just bangin and other shit is perfectly techinical but it sucks. Sometimes (actually most times) its all about the mood and the feel which u cant "check off" how a song feels to you.

IMO, you can't have it both ways, either post the beats with some structure and have all the beats up at one time, so everyone gets feedback, or have some post early, some post late, some get feedback, some don't (i.e. the way it is now).

All the tools are right there to start up the way I'm recommending. The coding thing is what it is, yeah, someone could probably do it, however over time I still think anyone who posts on the second day very rarely gets any feedback.

If you want to do it twice a week so you don't have to wait more than 72 hours for feedback on a track (say post Sunday and Wednesday, review Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday), that would work too.

Regarding someone posting and not feeding back, that's unavoidable regardless of the format. I prefer to set it up to increase the chances of people feeding back (which I think my recommendation works).

One note - I only posted in there maybe twice, and it was some shit that I did and five minutes later threw it in the showcase, so that spontaneous thing is cool, and maybe doing it the day before it starts kills that spontaneity, I don't know. Since you guys (Ominous/Ash/2Good/Sanova) spend a lot more time in there, I'd weigh your opinions much heavier than mine. Like I said though, I'm gonna be in there more this year, posting and reviewing, I feel confident that collectively this shit will improve.
