Yea I agree. Me and my homeboys always get into an argument about some rappers when I say they suck. Then they come back and say well they went platinum they must be nice. That pisses me off. It's a lot of cats out there that are tight and don't go platinum because they not as commercial as other rappers. Just like canibus.

IMO an artist doesn't earn credibility through shifting units

It's usually the job of good marketing/PR that's being pushed with a VERY BIG budget, and catchy pop songs off course :)

um well to play devils advocate here.......

writing hooks that are catchy is an art form itself.....

few can do that and do that WELL....... and on a consistant basis.

no amount of marketing and hype will make people buy into a product they do not like. people like these artists. my girlfriend loves the 50 cent singles, loves disco inferno and how we do, and its not because they are some deep, talented artists, it's because she likes the hooks, the beats catch her ears, and she likes to dance to them.

now, we may see a slickly marketed, well-oiled, just-rolled-off-the-pop star-factory line "artist" who sells millions of records to mindless idiots.....

but those mindless idiots like it! they like what we loathe; and there are more of them then there is of us.

end of day? things like "talent" and "skills" and "good" and "bad" are ALL SUBJECTIVE, meaning, it's an issue of opinion. people i think are wack enough that wack gets embarrassed when people call it wack, other people are like "so-and-so is the truth!" (which we all know is a lie, becuase- hello- i'm the truth. really. just read my name! lol).....

case in point? my friends sister heard the song "puke" off eminems album, and she was like "that is so fucking dope, i just knew i had to get it for you for christmas!" welll my friend thinks that the album, the song, and said artist are all pretty damn gay. so much for taste.

seriously, this is all subjective, and since 5 million people love nelly, nelly sells 5 million albums. 150,000 people liked xzibit, so thats what he sold. thats basically it in a nutshell- we may hate it, but a lot of people dont feel the way we do.

in the end, just say fuck it, and..........

SHAKE IT LIKE A SALT SHAKER!!!!!!!!!!

S club 7 sold hella units but that dont make em talented artists, they may be ok entertainers but they aint got soul and u can hear it in the music.
wow how you gonna come up here dissing S-club man bradley is the like the talib kweli of pop, and you know how bad he is after he got chuckedo ut for smoking weed ! LOL
yea i know wot u mean tho, but ive never thought that platinum sales = talent ! sumtimes talented artist will sell a lot of records sumtimes they won't but wot you have to think about is people who are selling that many records must be doing something right !

And also at the end of the day like cold said taste is subjective you and a 100,000 people mite swear immortal technique is the shit but then another person and 5 million others mite like nelly so at the end of the day no1 is ever right ! Who's to say nelly isn't the better artist when sales difference is that big, makes you think, no ?

why does everyone say shit like "he went platnium so that means he a good artist"

I think "good artist" is a very loose term that can be applied to many situations. Some people on this site are HOT, but they just aren't making any paper yet. They are good artists. On the other hand, an artist that goes platinum, who might be cheesy or fabricated can also be a good artist. I don't believe integrity is always a factor in determining the "goodness" of an artist.

Vanilla Ice was good...at the time and his best song still gets love. Come on you know you be singing "Ice Ice Baby" every once in a while.

Yo, you HAVE to give props to who ever sells a platinum record. Cuz If establish rapper like nas sold less than 25k THIS week, and that he has a DOUBLE CD, which means that only 10 000 people went this week to buy is shit!. But if you go on the street and ask these teeny boppers, if they know who Nas is they'll say yes, but he ain't selling cuz no one cares about him. So selling albums, doesn't make you a SKILLED artist but a good one, in term of charisma and all

cunts who go platinum dont always actually go platinum anyways. the figures are based on how many records were distributed not how many were sold to stupid ass fans.

"150,000 people liked xzibit"

cold - 150,000 bought his album, just cos someone bought an album dont mean they thought it was dope alot of peeps just buy whateva is currently seen as trendy to fit in. Or they buy albums to see what an artist is like that dont mean they like album, they might hate the album after listening to it.

I think the peeps should stop refering to these people (that sing cover songs and elementary school level cony tracks) as artists just call em entertainers

Yeah, I've also seen cases where the record company will buy back an artists albums just to make him or her seem like they are sellin' mad units. Alot of hype also moves units. Most fans are a bunch of bandwagon jumpin' clowns who run for the latest hyped up mc to be without even a blink at his or her skills. Hell, Britney is still makin' mils, and I just love Dragosta Din Tea! LOL!

uummmmmmm i said they liked xzibit... meaning 150,000 people liked him enough AS AN ARTIST to buy the album; whether or not they "liked" the album is immaterial. and i didnt pick the "trendy" artist aas it is. i deliberately picked X because he is now a pop figure who has complete crossover appeal, especially due to his mtv show, who has several albums to his credit but also sells very little as compared to other major artists in the pop world. - but i see what you are getting at.

thing is, yo ucompletely missed the whole point of that post; every artist ahs a certain fan base and the numbers are different for everyone, and since taste is compltely subjective, who is to say that the 5 mil who bought nelly's album arent right? chances are if you buy an album by an established artist, you have heard enough of that artist to know whether or not you want to buy something new from them.... now had i mentioned an artist who was on his first album with no buzz beforehand and came up out of the blue, then your argument on my argument would have legs. as it stands, it doesnt- you really missed the point on that post.

and, if someone who does covers isnt an artist, where does that leave sampling? thats the same exact thing. oh, yuo can give me the spill about "creating something new from something old" but doing a cover is the same thing really. and some people do great covers that i prefer over the originals.
