Recording vocals: Shure SM57 or 58?

depends on the source. I usually like the SM57 better but sometimes the 58 works. I usually use the Sure SM7 or the MD421 over the 57/58 but again each sound source is different.

i say 57 .... the sm7 slays them both on vocals though .. but its more expensive... but ive heard people say u caan get 2 diffrent sounds out of a 58 buy just screwing the top off but i never really thought so ... the 57 is also usable for other instruments as well....

out of those two id go with a 58, and ye you can screw the top off and remove the foam that makes a difference !
to be honest neither are that great for studio vocals, if you can record takes with them both and see which you prefer.

What is your budget? I think everyone should buy an MD421 ASAP! Most versatile mic period but they cost around $250-$300.
