If you've got more than one artist/rapper on the track, how important is it to record through the same mic/pre-amp???

I understand some rappers will have a certain set-up that gives them their sound... How detrimental or not could this prove to the consistency of the track???

While I mostly agree with Finn

I'd would recommend someone starting out in mixing vocals to do it all on the same setup. It's not really a problem to mix off different equipment, in fact I'd say its most important that your artist is more comfortable, but it's easier to get a grasp of mixing different vocals on one track. People have very different voices living in different frequencies and they need to be mixed accordingly and that there is much easier to grasp on the same equipment.

Like I said, it's not that much of a problem. Most equipment shouldn't be so different that it throw your process off -- especially if all the tools are of the same type (digital-digital, tape-tape, etc.) But if it's possible to do it all on the same thing, do it that way.

I think ideally it's the best but realistically it's not. If a rapper isn't OK with how he sounds, it will translate in the recording. Different mics have different characteristics so...I would be looking at whatever makes the rapper feel more comfortable/confident in what he's spitting on. jmo.
