Cool video Nice...had some hilarious stuff. The music was sounding good too. But I was a little surprised to see them recording off their cell phones (or palm pilots), instead of a rhyme book. Do most peeps you record with do that? Maybe I'm just old school. Anyways, good video.

lol..that shit is a little small to be reading lyrics from.

I got a flat screen monitor and "master writer" software for that. Though the rhyme book thing is a little dated, dudes still get down with the "old fashion" pen and pad.

Thanks glad you liked it ! ... It was a sidekick lx (conway) and I don't remember what O-Dub had
but yeah I write soome stuff sometimes and I either type on the pc in note pad or use the note
pad on my nokia e62 (think blackberry) ... I barley ever write anything on paper ever it's usually
pc or phone ... My boy Cambatta who raps 24/7 always uses a rhyme book though.

It depends how adapated to technology the artist is ... Thats what I seem to notice.

i sometimes write little lines and hooks on my phone and little pieces of verses on paper, but imo reading off anything in the booth is a NO NO. i never go into the booth with a piece of paper. I either got my shit memorized or Ill just wing it off the dome.

Now thats an mc. Takes his work seriously.
When you are reading lyrics, you are not concentrating on delivery you are concentrating on what the words are, which takes away from the quality of the performance.
Like in kung fu, you have to learn the moves through very repetetive practice, then when its time to deliver the moves they flow like water, with little mental effort. And when you know all the moves you can string them together in any way you like. Freestyle.

It's all about your skill level. I know many dudes that put in so much work that it's the norm for them to come in, write a verse and spit it from paper. If you've been Emcee'n for a while you can definitely read the lyrics and deliver an excellent performance. If you're good at what you do you can make shit happen!

^^^^^ i feel you and agree ....but thats just me personally .. i would rather spit off the dome than read ... i just brought that up cuz that verse dude was spittin sounded kinda uninspired.. sounding like he was reading the lyrics off his sidekick.. oh wait ..... he was ( no offense nice) .. ive seen, heard, and worked with alot of rappers.. and 9 times outta ten when they go in booth and pull out a notebook i shake my head and prepare for a loooong day full of punch ins and retakes.... of course there are rappers who read well .. established rappers read... 2pac read alot .. but from my experience recording and working with cats.. the more literature they bring wit them is in direct contrast to how prepared they are for the session. plus... paper makes noise .. esp if ur turning a page or ruffling around it .. if ur not careful can show up in the recording... and lastly cats have a tendency to look at the page rather than keep their mouth in front of the mic.. so they sometimes go off axis during the verse ... but hey i aint knocking nobodies technique i was stating mine.

lol...yeah....I was speaking about some, not all. I will agree that a planed recording session like the one viewed would have been better served if the Emcee's knew their verse before hand. What I usually do when working with novice Emcee's, is record them like what's shown in the footage, and then re-record them at another session when they've had a chance to listen to their flow and have possibly learned it. R&B artist sing from paper all the time but they usually don't have to stay focused on the sheet the entire time. It's mainly for reference in case they get lost some where along the way. Emcee's spitting from paper should be the same.

Increasing your vocab is a must as an Emcee IMO. Reading a lot, like you mentioned, will only make you better. I got a software program called "master writer" that helps me and my peeps out a lot. When they keep regurgitating the same shit every other song I pull that joint up so they can change their phrases and words out.
