Okay, I'm not a "hardware" guy so help me out,,,,,.My set up at home is PC based. I have a soundblaster soundcard, and hooked to that is a Behringer 4 mic input mixer. Now I have a condensor mic that goes into the mixer then into the card and thats how i record at home. Now when concernin pre-amps,,,am I safe to assume that hookin the mic to a pre-amp THEN to the mixer will give me better sound on the vocals?

***the mic is a MXL 2001

Actually, i wondered that too Stress, in the case of wanting to add tube compression....Hence, using a tube-mic-pre in the chain before the soundcard/breakout box on the 1820?.....I dunno tho, cuz the pre's on the EMU i got are pretty good already?

I got the same on Stress. They call it "phantom power". Its the switch right next to the power switch in the back.

What up Stress...Best way to record vox is to go: mic/pre-amp/stratght to sound card. Going from pre-amp to mixer to soundcard is redundant and may cause more harm than good. I'm not too fimiliar with the soundblasters these days. Have they gotten better than say 3 years ago? If you can afford a good sound card, go for it. MOTU, M-audio, etc. And also a good tube pre-amp. Focusrite, ART, Presonus etc.

yeah, but i noticed that theres a buttonmarked "pre" next to the 4th nob down on the mic inputs. I'm guessin thats the pre amp...........

actually thatbutton is for pre fader listening (sorta like cueing on a dj mixer) the mike preamp is built into the mixer the female xlr jack you plug the mic into has the preamp in it. turn on phantom power on the mixer and it will power the mic.

also im currently using a tube preamp (presonus blue tube) to mixer to soundcard set up. to be honest i dont realy hear much of a difference. i have the out put of the tube pre going in a line (not xlr mic ) input on the mixer

so if u decide to use a standalone preamp with it make sure u send the out put into a line input on ur mixer and not mic input.

yeah i got a eurorack 1002 , whic has one of them invisipres in the mic in channel.theres also a eq section on the same chanel ,then the output of my mixer goes thru an alesis nanocompressor, out of that into my emu1212.. im not really feelin the sound of the pre it so it looks like i might buy a a all in one pre amp,eq and compressor module. and just go out of those into a regular line in on the eurorack, out of that into my soundcard...

if you got cash i would go with the focusrite isa 428 (4 channel) or for cheap the fmr rnp is good. also the groove tubes brick is alright especially for the price
