I need to get some new monitors, and im on a bit of a budget. Iv found two pairs of monitors which look good:

Edirol MA10A:

ESI nEar 05

Can some of you sound engineers look at the specs and tell me which would give the best results. I will be using them with my Motif.

Thanks.

I would 200% choose Edirol. These are small but they sound great. Power is important in wut???

You need to mix at low volume to get a good reproduction of the sound.

Poeple wanna have big bass and big monitors. It only distort. After some time playin at high level, speakers get tired and that colors the sound.

For the same price you better get quality than quantity. Go for the Edirol.

You got a brand who got a name and a reputation, and a good service with Roland.

By the way specs tell nothings. I bought headphone for 10$ once, cheap ones and they were sayin freq response 20-20k lol. Cmon.

Any speaker you will buy, you will have to learn how they sound anyway. they all got their own response and reaction. Dont believe their is 100% flat monitors. Cuz you will take 5 different pairs who claim they are flat and they will all sound different. How flat is that.

Lol

ok ok i see what your sayin, and thanks.

the thing is though i got my setup in the corner of a big ass room. so they have to be on a much higher volume setting than they would in say a small bedroom. because i have to put them on this high volume, the sound gets distorted quite easily if bassy sounds are made. will them little Edirols be able to cope with bass at high levels?

I dont know why poeple need to hear the bass loud to mix it loud.

LEARN your speakers, if you know they r not bassy you will know to not overgain it.

Cuz you will try to boost it till you hear it on them, then you'll listen in another speakers and they will have too much bass.

Wut does the size of your room got to do with the power of your speakers???

It's nearfield monitors, you're supposed to be close of them. Being close, you will hear loud and direct in the field of em. You gotta make a triangle with em.

Anyway that's my advice to buy edirol but you do wut you want.

If i had to buy little monitors i would buy M-Audio BX5 or Yamaha MSP-3 but it ain't even in your choices.

You might be better off getting a good pair of headphones and calling it a day lol. The size of your room will make a difference on the type of sound that you get from your monitors. To be honest with you it's just not worth it to try and get some cheap monitors, your better off using whatever house speakers you have now, if you have any and use that as your monitoring system for right now.

A lot of people don't realize your monitoring is just about the second most important piece of equipment next to the instruments your recording, more important than converters, compressors, preamps, etc all that shit won't mean didly unless you can HEAR IT PROPERLY. Of course you can learn how to use any monitoring system with time but I wouldn't waste money, save up and get some half way decent monitors or better. If you have house speakers I would use that for the time being just learn how to use them, learn what frequencies they exaggerate or don't boost enough of, it won't be perfect but at least save up for the better monitoring.

I would expand and wait till you can pop so more cash into such... a bit more and you can get krk's, a bit more and you're close to a second hand genelec ( old version ).

of course... I say that all the time for a good reason...stick with what you got for now...

Yeah, architect got other points important here. You got to hear wut your doing. But bass response is shit on headphones. Yeah you hear it, but you are not sensing it. You got to hear it from close field monitors to hear if there is gaps or return (bass wave collapsing).
A lot of time bass squash your mix in headphones. Headroom can sometime sound smaller than is for real, resulting in a not full mix.

Some will say engineers use headphones, cuz they see that in TV and such, but they, like us, use em to avoid feedback, and to hear any error made by musicians, singer when recording. But when mixing they'll use monitors.

Call any studio, ask to the engineer if he mix with headphones. I agree with the fact that it could be better for him to save his cash to buy more decent monitoring system (Mackie 624, Genelec 1029 or Dynaudio BM5,etc..)

It's 200% better to mix on small monitors than on home stereo, except if you have high end stuff (Mission, Acoustic Research, Yamaha's Natural Series, Nikko,Etc...).

Edirol monitors are made for the only purpose of mixing, home system colors the sound so much. You can learn how your home system sound but you got to have an experienced ear to hear the frequency gaps and peaks and mix as you would when you know your monitors.

Go for it Rythmical and get em. You could buy used monitors, but you doesnt know wut they were used for, they could have problems in stereo imaging and field, they could be dephased and you will not notice it.

Used got no guarantee and lot of the time changing a piece in a speaker will cost half the price of it new.

But if you can get a good deal at a store you know well, you could get better monitors for the same price your Edirols new.

Do it right the first time. According to your current budget those type of monitors to be honest with you, will not really make your mixes that much better seriously. Unless your working on important mixes for P Diddy or something lol I would wait a minute for the extra dough. But do what you think is best in your situation you can always get better monitors later as well.

go to da store, bring ya favourite cd and play it on both them, different people = different ears.
u really need to go check them out and make up your own opinion when it comes to monitors, i cant stress this enough. If im not mistaken, the ESI Near 05 is like the M-Audio BX5 (think they have a deal wit m-audio and copied the monitor but the design is different, makin it cheaper)

But like formant said, u should consider saving more doe and get some betta monitors
2nd hand mackies, genelec 1029a (but then u would need the sub bass too which is expensive) Krk and Dynaudio is dope too.
