I seriously believe that anyone in hip hop actually doing something besides spittin bars is a bonafide nerd. Because you have to know a lot of sh*t when producing beats. I am talking boy scout nuclear engineer nerd knowledge. Just getting a turntable and trying to learn how to beat juggle is like a 2 credit college course or something. It takes an associates degree just to get the neddle balanced. The average negro....or person for that matter......ain't gonna voluntarily start teaching themselves compression and EQ and Graintable Synthesis without them being some sort of nerd. Only nerds do that.

Man most producers I know are either into computers heavy as their Day Job or are multi talented...can do some web dev or like you said some level of geek.....there may be some dull brains but that's usually not the case so I can see that a lot of the flashiness is a result of a gimmick or some image that the label likes to impose....to also help them fit with clique or artist they are surrounded by....that's my take even though there are some producers that are fitting some crazy or thugged out image authentically.
