i cant hear effects on an incoming signal (specifically: guitar and vocals), although i can hear an effect on it after it has been recorded. it isnt a complete "issue" from that standpoint, but it would be helpful to hear what is being played on the input. i am running an m-audio audiophile 24/96 card and cubase sx.

any pointers?

That is wut we call ''direct monitoring''. When direct monitoring is on you cant hear the effect you apply on the input source.

You only hear them after when you playback, exactly like you say. To hear your voice trough the mic for example while tweaking your favorite effect and set it right before recording you gotta disactive it.

You can do this in you M-Audio Control Panel and in cubase Sx i think its in File then Preferences or something like that.

Search in cubase index with direct monitoring.

The problem with no direct monitoring is that you can have latency, resulting in a chorus-like effect when auditioning your audio signal.

Personnaly I never did nothing else than pre and comp with hardware so I never recorded with effects inside cubase.

Why not only put them after? Then if you realize later that you put too much overdrive on that guitar you can come back and tweak it again.

That's the beauty of today's ways of workin. Total recall.
