The thing with MIDI is that it's only "recording" data (0's and 1's). So if you hook up your keyboard to your computer, hit record, then start pressing keys on your keyboard, your computer will only record the key strokes. When you play back what you recorded, you don't hear anything right?

This is because you need to hook up something to your keyboard. A sound module for example. Or, you could import a soundfont into your computer program, and play the soundfont sounds with your keyboard. The main thing is just hooking everything up properly. To get you started, check this out (it's a short tutorial, but it explains a few things):

How did you hook up your keyboard to your pc?

Hey,

If you're not satisfied with the way the loops sound that you've made, you may want to look into getting a wave editor or multitrack recorder program. With them you can layer, chop, reverse, add effects etc..

You're right, Reason will only record the pattern of the notes that you hit. If you want to edit the way the audio sounds after you've recorded the notes, you will either have to program the virtual synth, or you will have to export the pattern as an audio file and bring it into a wave editor.

Remember, MIDI is only used for three things (this is a watered-down list):

1. To trigger sounds from a sampler, sound module/keyboard or soft synth.

2. To provide a timing signal between the sequencers of two (or more) machines, like a drum machine and a computer running a sequence of notes played to something like a sampler, so that they play back together in sync.

3. To store, transfer and edit information on any MIDI device, such as the patch information on your synths.

You can also control lighting systems and fireworks with MIDI, but that's beyond the scope of this post.

Take care,

Nick

I HOOKED MY KEYBOARD RIGHT INTO THE AUDIO IN ON MY SOUNDCARD AND RECORDED THE AUDIO FROM SOUNDFORGE

IS THERE A PLACE I CAN DOWNLOAD OR VIEW SOME SORT OF IN DEPTH MANUAL OF WORKING WITH MIDI?
