Ok so, whats up yall. Thanks as always for taking the time out...

but chyea what is that effect on their? I know I've heard DJ Premier and Kev Brown both reference this. Do you like lower the bit rate or some shit? To mimic an old sampler? The SP maybe?

It sound cool and I'm trying see if Ican do it too. Holla! thanks again..

There are many different ways to do this, but when "CRUSH ON YOU" 1st came out, most producers were simply having it replayed by a band or whatever, even using DAW's and such. If you want to reproduce the same effect...I would start with finding the tempo that I wanted, then find the pitch, then use filters to fine tune the sample to your liking. All thats left would be putting on your beat.

thanks for the tips guys but-- maybe i should be more specific...

I'm pretty sure that this Lil Kim joint samples the first couple seconds of that Jeff Lorber joint I posted. They obviously have done something to the sample, added some effect possibly yes, but I swear I also heard (like I mentioned) other producers mention this technique specifically.

I know, for example Kev Brown on some of his production commentary shits that he put out referred to "slowing down a sample" and then "speeding it back up" in order to give it "that grimey feel." like for example you can hear the same effect here:

I've heard madlib do it...and also Pete Rock. I know there is a specific trick here. Can anyone with an sp-1200 tell us how the sampler works? does it record only in a certain mode or whatever?? maybe its an effect from the 303??? or the 505???? i dunno never used them. someone help.

What type of software are you using to modify your samples? Acid, FL Studio, Reason, Ableton?

If they really did just straight up sample that record without playing some parts in live other then the drums then you definitely have to consider what their signal chain was like...
Whether it was simple or complex, something was obviously going on there to impart that sound.
My guess is they prob just used an older model sampler like the SP-1200 or MPC60....
But as far as the lil kim joint goes, i dont think that beats sample is actually low-bit rate sounding, its just that youtube prob compressed the shit outa the track.
