independent film making/clearing music question

if i were to be making an independent film to be entered into a film festival etc. and i were to use someone else's music as part of the soundtrack, i know i would need to clear them for use but does anyone know how i would go about that?

ive got a simalar question. i gave this dude some beats to use in a tvshow that was aired on tv. some of the songs had uncleared samples. though it might be hard to pick em out cause the samples are flipped pretty thouroughly. but just curious bout the legal side of this.

i think you have to contact the record labels for whoever you sampled form to clear the sample.
