Hey,

Ahhhh, one of the many joys of Pro Tools!

There is one option for you: ProTools Free. It's a cut-down version of Pro Tools that uses normal Windows drivers to operate. It's buggy and only works on older versions of Windows. You can download it from Digidesign's site.

Your best bet is to try another software. Cool Edit Pro would be my suggestion.

Take care,

Nick

If you're also considering investing in a soundcard, you can buy the Digidesign M-Box, the cheapest they have but still a little expensive. This is what I got and use for recording vocals and mixing songs. If you're just looking to make beats, stay away from ProTools and try Cubase, Reason, Cakewalk, FruityLoops etc.
For recording, go with Cool Edit Pro like Vitaminwoman suggested, or something like SoundForge.

I forgot to mention that the M-Box is for ProTools (they come bundled). So if you wan't to use ProTools (full), that's probably the cheapest way...

It sounds like you're new. Try a multitrack sound editor like CoolEdit, Cubase... you can find it on the net.

Cubase SX can pretty much do anything that Pro Tools LE can do. Cubase is more production friendly in the sense that is has a host of MIDI features, VST instruments, etc. Now while there are VSTs for Pro Tools and basic MIDI implementation, the majority of the users that I know use simply use it for tracking and mixdown. It is basically a "staple of the industry." LE has some features which in my case are very limiting such as the max. 32 tracks of audio. Anything beyond and you have to start bouncing to free up track lanes. Not to assume or anything but most will never need to run 32 tracks at a time. I've done some live band recording and some film scoring and tracks add up fast in those situations. Pro Tools(full) doesn't have that limitation however but it is QUITE pricey... but Digidesign has a great reputation and equally great hardware/software and support. But enough about them, Steinberg is by no means lesser.
