how to record tracks/vocals?

when you guys record tracks/vocals do you record them in your computer recording software as 1 stereo signal going in on 1 track?or do you record both left and right as stereo on 2 seperate tracks then pan em hard right and left..or do you record them in as left and right on 2 separate tracks?as you can tell i'm confused on how to record each track from my MOTU to Sonar..thanks for any input!

from what i ahve heard u can only record vocals as a mono track.

depends on your soundcard, basic sound blasters do mono and professional cards do stereo. Verses and choruses are seperated on thier own tracks, along with doubling and adlibs. in reality though thats just a concept idea cause everyone has thier own idea and methods for recording.

Do it in mono, since it is one microphone picking up the voice. then, obvoiusly you overdub or add harmonies that are placed in different spots within the sonic spectrum.

Also, you raise an interesting point regarding mono v. stereo recording. Usually stereo recording encapsulates the utilisation of two in phase microphones usually placed in a "V" (also there is the BBC version of recording stereo.) You can find that on many websites if you just type in "Stereo Recording" in a search engine.]

Also, check out "binaural" recording. It is very interesting stereo recording methodology that uses a dummy head in mic placement. microphone placement by the 'ears' of the dummy head are then meant to pick up the sound in a similar manner (allegedly) to that of the human ear.

i dont know why you would want to record vocals in a stereo track.....you only have one mouth...lol....both the left and the ride are gonna be the same.....no point
