When we go to these stores who do we talk to? the manager?

What is consignment?

what do you mean by "Go to each store and see who are the distributors that get the product on the market."

and this "Ask them how long it takes for them to pay you should you place product in their hands." distributors pay you???

J-M you would talk to the management, or owner if the store is small (bubble records etc)

consignment means that you leave 5 or 10 discs witht that store and they pay you when they sell.

each store will probably deal with distribution companies, he meant to find out from the store owner which local or indie type distro companies move the most product through their shelves

and lastly, you'll want to know when they are going to pay you... do they need them all sold first? is it going to take two months for the mommy company to cut a check for 7 bux and put it in the mail?

hope it helped clear those up for you.

pReMise, good looking out with the book, and God good looking out with the write up i found it really good. God i know your working on part 2 and maybe more but when its all said and done could you give a list of some good books to pick up cause i have already read Tim sweeney "how to sell records indie" and i know from reading that, a person like your self could touch on some good points but not all of them and i am in the need to find out even more info.

I am not too familiar with books regarding the industry, believe it or not. I know that "This Business of Music" has been a bible for most people learning about the music industry. I read part of it once back in the 90's, and remember that I was coming up with counterpoints to things it said, especially regarding negotiations. They outline good key points, which are many, and any book regarding the industry- like the one you said, is a good primer for fundamental education.

I'm sure a web search could help you find books you want in a more specific context. I really can't help you on that.

Sincerely,
God
