i used to name my tracks just with a regular name that could fit the mood/theme of the track for example "When The Moon Shines".but if u got more and more beats and u want to make a catalog cd or just be able to be very fast when an artist says i want a beat like this or like that.then u start getting trouble if u got 100 or more beats and u got them just with a regular name.

now to resolve this mess.how would u name your tracks?

by date? speed? style? mood? instruments? maybe sumtin like this?

examples:

"04.15.07_90bpm_eastcoast_dark_guitar" ?
"04.15.07_85bpm_r&b_happy" ?
"04.15.07_eastcoast_90bpm_dark_guitar" ?
or just

"04.15.07_eastcoast_dark" ?

or wuteva?

how u do it?

Well, I name all my beats with regular names and that's it. If it's east coast dark I'll have all of those type beats in a east coast folder. So if an artist wants a specific style you just gotta open the right folder.

i feel ya but what if in your eastcoast folder u got 200beats and the artists or record manager that u want to showcase your beats says yo i want a fast dark sounding eastcoast beat? can u play that for me now?

then u go to the eastcoast folder and u FUCKED! cause dudes dont wanna wait till you find your beat! skipping the 200 tracks in your folder.

That's easy, if you want to be specific like that, you label: Beats > Hip Hop> Eastcoast > BPM Voila!

If you got more than 200 beats in your folder maby you should start selling some haha. No but seriously, yeah I'd prolly just go with making more folders till everything is organized to your liking and adding the bpm to the end of the name is a good idea. I personally like giving names to beats tho cuz I can deffinately find and remember a beat named "That's Serious" to a beat name "beat 148, 97bpm".

Yah I remember I used to name beats in digits like: 1, 5, 10, beat 50 and so forth. That shit got mad confusing after like beat 178 haha, for me naming beats works becuase I can alomost rememeber what it sounds like if I'm going back to it after some time, especially if it's in the correct folder.

I used to be very organized in reason. Named each beat Ad_beat num_month_year, eg Ad1-jan-2007 and so forth. But since i moved to logic earlier on this year, things are all over the place, gonna have to sort it soon though, get my old system back in place.

This is a really good question OM..
Me? Generally I just name it the first thing that comes to mind , but your right, when someone wants that shit later, they are always trying to hum it back or describe it which is impossible really.
So what IS the most effective way to name beats and then get them organized?
Cuz I name each one like a rorshack test really...

I have to remember if I play it for someone , or make a reminder"so and so" might wanna cop this. But I dont really have 200 beats in the pc ready to pull up either..
Mostly on disks...

I usually name my beats by date and genre, cos i always remember the date i made the beat on

how about this? the most important thing is the genre/style then maybe date then bpm then name? then maybe the sample that was used?

example

durtysouf_04.16.07_98bpm_roof_is_on_fire
westcoast_04.17.07_90bpm_ridin_my_64
westcoast_02.12.04_92bpm_bubbling
eastcoast_04.10.06_95bpm_hip_hop_aint_dead(sample aretha franklin see saw)

i think iam a try this out.

i name mine the same as wut i sampled so i dont forget wut i sampled
no doubt when sample beein used original name should be also in that trackname for future sample clearance or wutnot.

use itunes. you can put all kinds of stuff in the comments section, which is searchable, but it won't make your track names all messy like that. you can also sort by date added, and then search for a tag like west coast, and you can assign ratings from 1 to 5 stars, so if a guy comes and says, look, i need your best dirty south beat, instead of searching thru all your folders, just type in your production name and dirty south, sort by date added or stars, and viola you got all your best dirty south beats right there...you can also tag bpm data and sort by that also.
