If you had the money to buy or build a commercial would you do it or would you put the money into a home setup?

Commercial has it's benefits. You don't have to worry about stragners in your house. It also can put you in the right mindset. Some people say there is a reason why surgeons operate in a hospital and not in the kitchen.

But I am for the home setup because inspiration comes at the strangest moments and having your setup right down the hall is a great luxury. You wouldn't operate in a kitchen but if someone needed to deliver a baby and they just happen to be sitting in a kitchen.... well you'd deliver the baby right there in the kitchen. You do what you have too.

That's Hip Hop. You do what you have to with what you have.

I vote HOME STUDIO.

Then when you are rich enough... have both.

I would like both but would prefer to build a commercial spot ... When you you create a business and it begins to become succesful you move from out of the house to opening
a location. Also the right atmosphere gives you a better mindstate as well. When you hit
up a nice studio it sparks your creativity and your jumpin' and ready to go in and get to
work because everything looks nice and official.

Who wouldn't like to own a studio and be able to just make trips to it whenever rather
than walking down the hallway of your house and going in one room with equipment. But
unless your are opening a studio as a full fledged business, I'd recommened doing it from
home because as we know running a fluu studio can be very costly and if you do not
recoup you will be losing alot of money as it is very costly to operate and maintain one.

I was faced with this scenario in real life, I started making plans for a studio 3yrs ago. After doing some research in my area, I found out that building a commercial studio wasn't a good investment for me. Then I thought about renting a spot for a commercial studio and that wouldn't have been smart on my part either. Then I finally decided to do the in house thing but after meeting some of the cats that wanted to record, I dropped that shit like a hot piece of lava. That was OUT! So I compromised by buying a small spot very close to my house. I started building a 5 room recording studio when I realized that building this studio was crazy. To be truely commercial would mean that you would have to invest ALOT of money in trying to keep the latest gear and technology. If you take a look at studios like REAL WORLD STUDIO'S and THE HIT FACTORY you will find that you have to have some serious cash to be competetive on that level and pull in the big names(which is where the money is). My pockets arent that deep eventhough I make good money plus I have investors on my side. If I were to focus just on MY music, in home is cool but if you want to actually make money and do other peoples shit, go commercial. Y'all know that old sayin' "dont bring sand to the beach" well heres one for producers, "dont bring unknown ni&&@s in your crib."

After already owning a home studio and having recorded/mixed/engineered for numerous people, i would DEFINITELY prefer owning a Commercial Studio. The atmosphere alone sets it apart. Its all about business and professionalism. At home, anything can happen. House phone rings, washer/dryer/furnace, kids running around, etc. Plus I "dont bring unknown ni&&@s in your crib."(Well put Dacalion) The list goes on n on. It is very expensive as H&R stated before but dats part of owning a business. It takes money to make money. I would love to wake up, take the kids to school, go to the studio, work my 9 to 5 there, leave and pick my kids back up, and spend all night with my family. I know thats quite unrealistic at the moment but reachable if everything is in place. I would also have another engineer work nights because I know there are alot of lazy artists out there who dont wake up till 1 in the afternoon and are most productive at 2 in the morning. I have contemplated this very thing for quite some time now and once the chips are in place, its a no brainer.

It all depends on your work load. If your working with people you've had dealings with for years or just a few acts, the home studio is what you need. If you produce a hit record or at least one in heavy radio rotation and several artist, labels or manangement companies start trying to get at you. You have no choice but to find or build a commercial spot. I'd let the work load dictate that. Building, buying or renting a spot just because you think it's a good idea or that you can make money is not a good investment. More times than not (unless u got big bucks) that shit will be shut down in 6 months to a year. Been there done that!
