Whats up everybody, I am new to the hip hop production scene. I was wondering how exactly to make samples for hip hop music. Where do u get cool sounds, and when you do, how do u make it into your own. What are the techniques, and any advice you have for making hip hop samples.

To make samples? I'm not quite sure I follow you.
Do you mean sampling from another record or getting individual sounds?

it depends... you got to dig!! start with a simple piece of music, like a piano on an old jazz record/cd/tape/etc., and loop it, change the pitch, apply filters, just play with it. the best advice here is practice, practice, practice.... dont try to hard at first; be basicwhile you are learning. what do you use? if you have an mpc you can really play with the basics of this. i am not familiar with too much software... im a drum machine guy myself. so the things you do depends on what you use. you can chop a long sample into 2-3-4 pieces, assign them to different pads and pound away until you come up with a new melody... also i would recomend learning step recording if you own a drum machine.... it takes a bit to grasp, but it makes a world of difference.

Study hard and find some producers that already know

Use your ear thats the best thing to do.....and also use records if you can or real instrument samples and riffs that will help....listen to Premiere and some old Wu Tang to get some patterns and how they use a piano sample or samples...and see what they do with their basses...bpms, velocity etc.....you know the basics.....all hip hop beats follow certain rules and patterns.....again just use your ear

Answer 1; You get hip hop samples from TV, records, CD's and any other source you can come up with. To be honest, you can take a guitar line from a heavy metal band, put a hip hop beat behind it and voila ! You've just made it into a hip hop sample. What I'm saying is this...you can use just about anything and give it a hip hop flavor. The sky is the limit.

Answer 2; There are a few ways of making it your own. For starters you can get permission from the origin to use it as it is, or you can process it until it doesn't sound nothing like the original sample, or you can just do you own thing and ofcourse that would be your own. (I suggest doing your own thing but sometimes you just gotta have that familar sound playing.) I hope that helped. Good Luck !

to sample something, just take anything that is pleasing to your ear, and record it -- from there you have infinite possibilities

use effex to tweak sounds. this is very usefull if you dont want you sample to be recognized. get a mike and sample sounds from acoustic instruments if you can. sample some live guitar and bass riffs. sample from scary moovies (background music from scary moovies), ther is alot of good sounds to be found and fondled with from scary moovies. The possibiloities are limitless once you know how to edit audio. Try to save your audio for editing in wav format. wav. is universal sound format. get a program like wavelab to beef up your sounds

you need a good drum machine/sampler. (MPC is my choice) you can sample anything from anywhere. If you want that live feel, sample breakbeats and chop them up into kiks and snrs, or for hot commercial beats, visit banginbeats.com
I have the whole library and its hot, the sounds will take your beats to the next level to be sure
