Okay, recently I have been pondering on buying a Roland vs-1680... I have a computer already equipt with logic... The thing is that I've heard these can be alot better to use than a computer.. For instance My computer is used for alot of things besides "recording" music... I have tons and tons of drums samples and shit that takes up space, songs, programs all that good shit... I think I would much rather perfer using a harware recorder for the use of just recording music... Might I add that a roland vs-1680 can work with logic... I have know clue on how that would work, if someone knows about that enlighten me please.... But my main question is: Of the people here that use a Hardware Recorder (whatever the fuck it's called) do you perfer that over a computer (and vice versa)? And also, How would i go about multi-tracking a beat in the Vs-1680?

I had this digital recorder called the boss br-532 or somethin and I hated it It was fucking horrible! If I were you I would stick to the computer (maybe upgrade it) On computers editing is much eaiser. If your worrying about samples and stuff taking up space why dont you get a removeble firewire hard drive. heres one http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10023 its says 179.00 but i've seen them for 150. at guitar center.

Yeah, I have looked at a usb Harb drive a couple times... It is a good idea and I thgink i will definitly need one... Is there a quality difference with a vs-1680 compared to my computer (windows xp pro, Amd processor, 356 ram, m-audio delta 1010lt)? The reason i'm asking is because I have been ponbdering on this, no made it for sure yet.. Just wondering, I would like to mix with faders and all that... But now that I think about it I could just get a usb fader controller for logic.... HMMMM? I really don't know? Im very unsure about it just wondering what would be the best? On some super honest shit!

IMHO, Hardware Recorders are better. (i use the yamaha aw-16). With a computer you gotta sit in front of a screen with a mouse and keys all day. Plus movin the mouse across the screen and all that. Its a pain in the ass to me. Its true that there are things you can do with a comp that you cant with a multitrack, like see everything you recorded and edit and cut and paste shit kinda easy, but id rather sacrifice that shit for havin my box that i can do all that shit with.

Now say you wanna record on the multitrack (hardware recorder), you wanna put the beat in the first channel. You choose the channel you want, press record, play your beat through, stop recordin. Your all set. Now you wanna record your chorus(s), choose the channel you want then record it. Add fx or whatever, then your all set. Verse, verse, other chorus, whatever, etc.

They both do basically the same thing, but i just feel the hardware is easier to use and understand, and its more fun with the hardware. Its kinda just preference. I even still use a 4track to put albums together. Id still choose a 4track over a computer. I just prefer that hardware. You can bring it more places thatn your pc.

It cant really be explained, you gotta see it for yourself.

let me know if you got any questions bout it though.

I'm thinking about getting a seperate hardware recorder and just using the computer for hardcore sampleediting. Maybe somehow even get reason and use the computer as a virtual processing rack for all of my recording equipment. Basically, I'd never want an elaborate setup. Just a computer (mainly used for sample editing and processing), turntable and a hardware recorder (an mpc 4000 would be nice...then again, so would the 76ers winning, but we can't have everything)

P.S.

Been on vacation from the site for a minute, but I'm back...Illmuzik's never forgotten over here.

AIght cannon, how are the mastering tools? Do u get a waveform image with the one your using? I might check that one out but i know the vs-1680 is widely used... Plus it looks dope, and it's got motorized fadersm, fat ass LCD screen...

the shit aint mine, i work wit somebody who got it, but i use the shit almost everyday. It got compression and eq and all of that, after you add all that shit, you bounce all the tracks to mixdown, and burn it straight. I dont usually gotta do much masterin and mixin, cuz the sound is usually kinda nice straight off it.

Youd def be good wit the VS. That shits nice. Just get the manual and read all the features. Cuz if you gonna get somethin that big, make sure your usin all the features your payin for.
