He's telling me that Immortal Technique is underground...

I think he's major enough to get a deal with Koch..(chuckles).

Even though people out here in the south for the most part don't know much of him.

The funny thing about this kind of debate is it always goes differently according to whos deciding what is underground and what is mainstream...

To me as long as you aint blowing the fuck up on the "radio" or the "television" or have a massive fanbase beyond a "regional" following then yeah, your underground, and visa-versa...

Now in regards to the perspective of "sound" - which i personally disregard when people are talking about underground vs. mainstream because i think its a poor way to categorize someone in one of these two schools, I suppose he fits a more mainstream bill rather then the other way around, its just that he spits more knowledge then say yer mainstream boy kanye ever could about real life....

That's the difference though. You can have a widely known underground artist and they wont be considered mainstream because they just aint signed to a label that will throw them into a screen with bling. I think anything that is not confined to video and air play about love in the club and jewelry is underground.. cause you rarely find it on Tv or radio.

If I was to go out on the street and ask an average person if they heard the latest immortal technique song, the likely answer there would be NO... Therefore I would still label him as underground...
and It isn't his music or content to me that makes him underground it is his status among the people. I think you know you're mainstream when you become a common name, and are a recognizable artist.

Tech refuses to change his content for the major labels... if he wants to curse, he will... if he wants to talk about shootin someone in the head, he will... he's not goin to conform to the bs a mainstream artist has to go thru... this is the deal: u get more people knowin you, a lower pct off every cd u sell, including shows now, and ur verses and songs bein screened by others that will decide what make the album... vs. less people knowin u, a bigger pct off ur cd and all or most ur show money, and u get to put what tha fukk u want on ur album and say, FUKK THA CRITICS!!! less mainstream fame... more immediate cash... also, less people workin for you, u gotta do alot on ur own.... some of us love it that way.

i opened up for Tech and Papoose and got $350 for 10 minutes on stage, plus $10 for cds i sold in tha club on my own... rumor has it at that time, Tech was gettin 5-8 grand for about 30 minutes of work... about 3 yrs ago... Papoose got a lil more and bein that he was last and the show started late, they cut his time, yet, he still got his set amount... but Paps is tryin to go mainstream, he came with a whole SLEW of peeps... Tech came by himself, maybe some friends, 3 or 4... u do tha math.

That's dope, and cool that you know him personally too. I consider him underground because of his content and stature. Nearly every hip hop head I've spoken to knows of him, but you ask a non hiphop head, and they won't know.

that's dope that he is making his money and staying away from the major label grip. I think every artist in some way wants to do what he's doing, but for the common label of "Mainstream" I wouldn't label tech under that category.
