the turntable part is up to you, or someone elses' advice cuz I know nothin bout em except technics is good... as far as connecting it, you should be able to buy an adapter at radio shack or your local or online electronic junk store... if the turntable has rca or phono out, you could get a phono/rca to 1/8" headphone adapter.

The only thing holdin any of that back would be the issue about most laptops don't have microphone or line level inputs, only outputs... in this case, all is not lost! you can still get a decent external usb soundcard like the audigy ext and plug it into the usb port on your laptop, but you still might see some performance issues.

if you r not gonna scratch dont worry about getting anythign to expensive. as long as you can connect a nice needle youll be fine.

Get the Vestax HandyTrax. JUst as portable as your laptop, built-in speaker, line and headphone output (so you dont have to bother with a phono preamp).

And even if you get rid of your laptop someday, but continue to do digging, you'll wanna keep it.

It does 33 1/3, 45, and 78. But if you do 78's, then Vestax suggests that you buy the 78 needle.

Vestax HandyTrax........................................$120-140
Vestax 78 or 33-45 replacement needle.........$10-20

yo i think the Numark TTX is really good with all the same features as the 1200's and more.... like more features like pitch,reverse,two tone arms,so either one will do the trick.

P-1,
If you want something portable, get the vestax handytrax ($129) or the Columbia GP3 (hard to find: $160-$200).

If you want something that will stay in one place, say what you want in more detail. And im sure i can help you out.

im just looking for something that i can add to my setup. helix, im not trying to bring it around with me. although that vestax looks kinda tight though. im just looking for something i can sample off and prolly speed up or slow down the tempo of the record.

I'd say that you should go too a pawn shop or check in your parents attic. Unless your rich, you probly dont wanna spend $400 on a SL1200 that your only gonna play records on.

Just make sure that its not expensive. The best new product you could get for what you want is probly just to get a Numark TT1600 belt-drive, then get a phono pre-amp. Unless you already got one.

If you get a vastax handy trax or the new numark portable turntable you don't need an amp tho....
If you don't have an amp and you also don't have an in port on your laptop, you should check this;
Terratec Phono Preamp USB Studio w/ Sound Rescue Software . It's a simple usb audio interface for recording 2 ins (phono) that are powered.
Anyhow good luck.
