I've heard enough of this cat---the Lame---to know this: a year is not long enough to proclaim one's self as a savior of anything. This cat isn't offering anything new to the genre. Nothing. Man, look, his motivation is not from the heart. It's from the pocket. How the hell do you get shot in the heart and live? This guy decides to rap after he gets shot. He said that himself in interviews, so I can give him credit for being an honestly fake MC. So, what was rap for him before he got shot? If he was really in it to be a "savior"...then he would reject that title and actually bring something new for the West Coast. But he's not. It's the Same S**t. No new flows, no new topics, no new feeling, nothing. I've heard the tunes. The mixtapes, the press, all of it. It's all a hype machine full of hot air. The bottom line is that this cat has paid no dues as a Hip-Hop artist, and it's a slap in the face of all the truly talented and hard-working MCs I'm sure we all know, as well as the ones who are in the biz and remain underrated...Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch, Del, Hiero, Bad Azz, Jean Grae, Medusa, and the like.

meanwhile, jean grae is crying somewhere right now, quite literally, because she doesnt have a deal. you dont thik that whole starving, slept on, passed over, too-smart-for-my-own-good story isnt her "5 shots"? how long have the roots played and ate off this underated/unloved by the label-but-respected-by-real-artists, we're struggling so bad we HAVE to tour constantly routine? thats been their "5 shots" for years, and they have carefully crafted these last two albums for demographics and trying DESPERATELY to gain mainstream attention. they went away from what came naturally and crafted some to intentionally appeal to the lowest common denominator... and failed both times.

First thing, I'm my father's son, not yours.
Second, rap is a way out. But only one. When you have to act like it's the ONLY option, I get scared for my people. Snap yourself out THAT, "son".

Third, Jean Grae has a new album coming this month ("This Week") and another one coming out later this year ("Jeanius"), so...if I see any tears on her, it must be from joy.

For all of the ROOTS efforts--and believe me, I'm a ROOTS fan--Black Thought still gets slept on. If those attempts were such failures, why still be in the business? Because they love what they do, and their fanbase is loyal with good reason. There's no good reason to support a marketing gimmick like the Lame.

Another thing is...everyone wants to get paid. It's HOW they go about it that reveals who they are and what impact they can truly have, and how long they'll be here. There's no one way to make all the money, but I do know that everyone would like to make it on their own terms. The Lame put himself at the mercy of a marketing-hype machine that would never get off the ground if not for 50's precedent or Dr. Dre's "endorsement".

The Lame has cut out certain middle men...like hard work, taking some L's, getting booed off stage a few times, winning over fans in the flesh...but AT WHAT COST to us from the average consumer to the real Hip-Hop connessieur?
