I usualy go by ear when working with them in Reason, if anyone can give me a short explaination on the knobs and talk about trick or tips you have would be cool

You do it already, going by ear is the only way to learn, in my opinion.
Re Compression, I try not to use too much compression, but if I do I export the wav and apply multiband compression to the wav.
I use ratio's about 2.1-4.1 nothing really too much out of that range, but still use you ears.
The more you use them the better they get, thats the key I think.
