Where is the line between "keepin it real" and "entertaining"?

you cant tell the diference because the two are so blurred together... and everyone is like "i'm just bringing that real street level ish....." but then these same people are like "its just entertainment".... so i am wondering where that line is... because it doesnt seem like anyone can get their story straight.

2 me it's like this.....

it is just enternainment.....
the message you just tell... is where the real street level ish.. comes 2 factor...
wether you use music 2 speak a positive message... wether is use 2 have fun...
or wether you use it 2 make monet.... that where the reality comes in.... when they themselves right it.....

everybody get's it twisted.. with hip hop.... like is it real or is it entertainment... it's both... you can'y tell me you never wrote a ryhme that was an exaggerated truth... ... it the same thing your giving him info but making it fun for him 2 peep it...

when your in the industry... it becomes meshed with entertainment..... the shows...
the covers.... the life.....

you can be keeping it real and be entertaining...

i mean if your not intersting who the fucks is gonna care... when there 100,000 more out there...

Well problem is with hip hop the whole art of Keeping it real is really important to alot of rappers, it really depends on the type of work you enter the game with, if you enter the game witht he same style, with the same message, and you keep it real with where you came from then thats keeping it real if you conform to what soceity wants you to be, or change this and that just to sell this much more...then...thats selling out... and also in terms of keeping it real by bringing reality, what reality are you bringing? upperclass reality lower class reality, so its a pretty deep question can go so many diffrent directions

good point black...i hate when people say "he aint keepin it real" like when rappers move out da hood or try to expand their styles and shit....why the fuc would u live in da ghetto if you idnt have to? thats bullshit..lifes about upgradin..whether it be upgradin your musical sense, upgradin yourself and your family/friends....i say its damn near 99% entertainment..even artists that "stay underground" or whatever..they know...but on some real shit the most sucessful artists ARE the most enterating ones, like it or not, a show sells

I think "keeping it real" means telling the truth and saying what you think. Also it can be expressing the original values of Hiphop culture.

I think entertainment is simply when other people enjoy your music.

I think the two go hand in hand....atleast they do for me. If a rapper is up on stage talking shit, its not entertaining cos i just dont buy what he is saying and it doesnt affect me. If, on the other hand, a rapper is up there spitting beautiful truths or just getting the crowed hyped, i can relate to it and i will be entertained.

Hip Hop music is entertainment. Its just like movies .... you have drama, comedy, action, etc. A movie can be based on a true story or it can also be something made up but at the same time realistic. The same goes for Hip Hop. Its like saying Robert Dinero ain't keeping it real when he plays the role of a Italian Gangsta because he ain't never killed anybody. You don't have to do that in order to speak on it, play a role or rap about it. You might know someone who has been through that situation or seen it.

the thing is that many times skill isnt what sells the record; its your story, your personality, contraversial or not.... but you can entertain and sell records without pretending to be something you are not on wax..... especially when you have rappers like dmx who are very personal rappers who seem to really put their heart and soul into their work, because with him its like, what are you? are you a preacher in a thugs body? or a thug trying to be a preacher? he seems like the entertainment aspect is secondary to his need to be heard... he is always talking about his internal struggles and all that, so thats when i wonder whats just acting and what isnt.

The line between "keeping it real" and "entertaining" would depend on their definitions...to me, "keeping it real" means being truthful and thats rare in the hip hop world. "Entertaining" means to amuse and these days amusement is very rare also. Some are amused by the longest lasting trend hip hop has ever seen (killing mofo's) but I'm not. So if I were to put a line on the difference between the two, I would have to say that it lies somewhere around the point where the truth starts getting stretched into a lie...lol

i think yall just about lost the focus on hip hop... its whole point is to convey a message... MC's are storytellers... everytime you tell a story it comes out different...

Rappers are a bunch of liars they say what sounds good what they would want to be like they are good actors and people need to know how to tell the difference between entertainment and reality
