DJ Khalil has become my favorite producer and I have to be honest his records don't sound like anything else out.

This record with Fabolous is crazy and I still can't believe he's using REASON for these sounds.

I'm trying to break down the elements of the song and the sounds and the effects are top notch!

I came to this conclusion:

#1-That organ sounds like it came from one of his vintage keyboards and he sampled the sounds from it into reason or maybe its a refill sound layered up with combinator.

#2-For the life of me I can't figure out what effect he is using on that organ it almost sounds like a gate effect with a filter automation on it

#3-The sound of his records sound big and his use of effects and automation are serious

#4-WTF! I've never heard a refill with these type of sounds he had to have created his own refills that are top secret

I'm one of the people who have doubted Reason and its sound quality but when I hear records like this I have to say I'm starting to think otherwise.

I really wish Propellerhead would do a series of videos of producers besides all of the techno guys they have on there site.I know alot of hip-hop producers are quiet about there methods so I doubt that will ever happen.

Let's here what you guys think about this record???

Reason is sick, it's like everything else though, it all depends on what you do with it. The most powerful feature of Reason in my opinion is having the ability to do crazy routing options. Also do a search for Propellerhead's interview with DJ Toomp, TI - "What you know" most of that song was done in Reason, lots of stuff he has done was done in Reason, if you haven't already seen it that is.

The main lead sounds like a custom made Malstrom patch being controlled by a Matrix or RPG-8 or something. Or maybe as you said an Organ with a gate and some modulation.

What I like about Reason is that you can make your own sounds and import them into the NN19 or NN-XT, that is what I do I'll take some sounds from SampleTank, Xpand! or Structure and maybe a custom patch from one of the synths in Reason combine them, then multi-sample them and import them into reason.

Now DJ Kahlil is multiple levels beyond me production wise, so I'm not saying I could pull off what he is doing but it is all possible in Reason. The record is nice not my favorite in the world, but it is very creative.

Im opening up my mind to different things and creating unique sounds is at the top of the list.Ive been messing around with Reason lately as well as sequencing all in ProTools 8 but the only issue Ive ever had with Reason is leaving my VST's behind.I guess alot of users just spolied it for me and left me with a bad impression of Reason but Im starting to find my own way.

You don't have to leave your VST's behind, it's just a matter of incorporating Reason into your current set up. You are using PT as your front end and that is what I'm using as mine too. It's just finding a work flow that works for you.

Do you know how to use the hardware interface in reason to rewire your instruments to separate track into Pro Tools? Like I said I use PT as my front end and then just rewire the separate instruments from Reason into separate tracks in PT. That way if I want to add something form Sampletank or Xpand! or something I can.

I'm thinking of different way to incorporate reason and its a few things I like about reason that Im looking to add between the PT Air Instruments and a few other VST's im set on sounds but I like the way Reason sounds with programming drums and I like Dr.Rex alot too although I would love to be able to do eveything in Reason but like I said I havent found a library for Reason that can replace my VST's

I see what you are saying, from what I have found to get the most out of Dr. Rex you need Recycle, otherwise you stuck with buying pre-made .REX files, which is cool, just doesn't do it for me though I like having control over everything I do.

It sounds like you have already dropped a lot of coin on the AIR instruments and those are good in their own right. As far as finding a library for Hip-Hop/Rap for Reason yea your kind of out of luck, there are some things out there, but most of the stuff is geared towards electronic music.

I say just use what works for you, because at the end of the day your main audience doesn't care what you use, as long as it sounds good.

interview

Yea I know thats exactly what I thought otherwise all of that stuff in his studio would be gone and it would be all refills

There's an interview floating around out there with Khalil where he talks about using Reason in combination with his keyboard collection and how sometimes he samples in Reason so he can use the strengths of the Combinator and NN-XT to augment his keyboard collection....

I met a producer once who had over 50GB of ReFills... all custom-made by some engineer from NY... it's like some sort of insider thing that only a few guys out there seem to have access to... Damn, I would pay $$$$ for those...
