compression without compressor?

i was just wondering if cool edit pro has any time of effect where u can take a vocal audio file and make so anything higher than a certain level gets compressed,im wonderin this because this mc i recorded had a good session and his levels were good for the most part but on some parts he was peakin and it sounded distorted and if i loweed the volume it woulda sounded to faint,any ideas yall

you can probably get some results from trial and error...but if you have any parts of the vocals that clipped just like any other signal you are going to have a hard time trying to restore the level to a normalized value....so if you have really off the meter peaks you gotta do some magic like either have them re-record it or maybe use some other fx on that part to possibly hide the harsh clipped areas....that's why you have to get a peak sound check and also train the mc how to use the mic and whenever use a filter so that controls the distance.....but if the vocals are just barely clipped you can sometimes use a de-esser and some other tweaking....

hmm on acid u can use those audio enevelop tings, choose da volume one n u can kinda do a compression, u sorta draw a curve definin where uwant da volume high n where low, try it
or u can simply jus use a gentle compression

hes gotta stand furhter from tha mic... i dont think ethres a way too fix clips .. i mean u could try to restore but it never really sounds quite right.. u might have to redo the vocals to get the nice quality u want

Out studio situations always makes my bring along the focusrite. I would recommend a good pre amp ( valved ) to set the colour . Compression isn't always the best solution, mostly its only making the good recording/take. I'd rather rule out bad recordings and go again. Some things just cant be fixed for the better.

I have to agree with everyone, do the recording sesion again.
I don't know if cool edit supports vst's but I know a very good software compressor for free, it's called endorphin:
