circa 1994, greatest year in hip hop?

So many classic albums dropped around 1994. It was the year that hip hop started to shift back towards the east coast again after snoop, dre, and the rest of the west"came through and crushed the buildings (jay-z: money, cash, hoes). Wu-tang, Illmatic, Doggystyle, Biggie....The list goes on.

True indeed. I think 1994-1996 were the best hiphop years for me. When Shook Ones came out, Wu, S&S mixtapes, the list goes on.

I would say from the late 80's to around 1997 there was something good going on...

I would say, '93-96'. But who cares I love hiphop today, you just gotta dig a little deeper. The underground hiphop scene in the world today is so big. I mean here in Iceland, our population is about 260000 but still more than 12 icelandic hiphop albums were released this year.

i think from 89 to 94 was the golden eara of rap cause during that period more hip hop classics were produced than any other period in the history of rap.

some of the albums that came out redifined modern music as a whole as well as setting new standards and trends within rap music (hip hop music)

But there is always good music being made and released people just have to look a bit deeper to find it these days, which was not the case in the early to mid 90's

Thes One from LA hip-hop duo, People Under The Stairs, revealed a US hip-hop scene desperately in need of risk takers.

Q: If you had to mark out a particular period in hip-hop's long history that you see as its most fertile, what years would you go for?

A: '90-'95 - it really got to the top and then disappeared, fell off the face of the map.

Q: You're really talking about the period of Pete Rock, D.I.T.C. and so on...

A: D.I.T.C., Beatnuts, Pete Rock, Fellowship, Pharcyde, Souls Of Mischief - everyone was contributing to it. After that I don't know what happened. I think that it was about the time that Puffy started Bad Boy... I dunno?

People started making substantial amounts of money out of hip-hop and driving Bentleys and all of a sudden, if you were on a major label, they expected that of you. So everyone that we looked up to started getting dropped. The type of music that the producers were making, like Pete Rock and the Beatnuts and stuff, wasn't making money for labels. They realised, 'hey, if we do this jiggy crap, then we could be making millions'. So everything changed.

There is no year that can come close to touching '88. Just about every single album that came out then is an undisputed classic. Time will only tell if a year like that can ever be reproduced.

resurrection, blowout comb, cuts on ODB,MethodMan,GZA albums were insane, sothernplaylistic, labcabincalifornia, dare iz a darkside, onyx, king t and the liks, hiero glif, krs feat. dj premier, beastie boys, smiffnwesson........

it was a special time for techno aswell

oh yeah, some cypress hill, some saafir, organized confusion was intense, i heard some rass kass, anotha level was smooth

What about 88 ? PE , BDK, BDP , Eric B and Rakim , Audio Two , Biz Markie , Cash Money and Marvelous , Chubb Rock, EPMD, 45 King, Marley Marl , Slick Rick, Ice T, NWA, Kool G Rap and DJ polo,
Jungle brothers, Just Ice, King T, Mantronix, CMW, MC Lyte,RUN DMC, Stetsasonic, Too Short, Ultramagnetic MC's all released dope albums that year...
