I've been listening to the Hip Hop on the BBC 1xtra radio station recently (http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra). It seems to me that all the current 'hit' records are just lame 2 bar instrumentals with some guy rapping about crap for 3 minutes. :headbang: Why is there so much talent on this site when it comes to production, but this is the crap that passes for the standard we aim to achieve?
I hope that projects like the IllMuzik CD will help get more exposure for the real talent that's out there.

Keep digging!

Peace.

This is not aimed at only darkmatter but a lot of other people on here.
I enjoy coming on to this site and reading a lot of new stuff, listening to people's productions and sharing my knowlegde with people and absorbing other people's knowledge in order to try and make myself fit for a beatmaker/producer career.
Therefore, what I find boring is the constant bitching that goes on here about this commercial production and that commercial rapper.
Seriously, if you don't like what's on the radio or tv, turn it off! Corporate labels are making a fortune right now and the industry is most likely not going to chance anytime soon.
Also, why spend your energy on here dissing whoever. Why not spend your energy trying to make a difference, trying to change the game and using your energy to absorb all the good stuff off here.
I see this at work too. People hating on the people who have been promoted etc...funny thing is, the same people who are hating are the ones who stay in their same position and don't get anywhere.
Also, I don't mind people dissing corporate labels for promoting some of this stuff, cause I do agree that some shouldn't have been released but you can't diss a rapper's or producer's personal expression. It might not be your personal taste and that's fine but leave it at that.
Also, Hip-Hop has changed, there are more styles to it now and the underground is still around. It's not like it got tons of airplay before. Before, radios just played pop or some other stuff instead of those commercial rap songs.
Also, it might be hard to see because of all the commercial songs, but, from my point of view, it has actually helped the underground become more accepted too and I see/hear stuff here that would never have been played some years ago.
Either accept the good things and the bad things or use your energy to change the bad things you cannot accept...however, complaining about it here won't make any difference apart from perhaps spreading negativity.
I'll stop ranting now and let someone else speak even though I have lots more to say. Sorry if I came off to hard...I guess it's been bugging me for months and I just reached the point where I burst...

well................. let me just say that while i am also bothered by the style that has invaded the airwaves, there have been many artists that have come to the forefront in the last year that are very good for hip hop....

let me start with little brother and 9th wonder's production.... say what you will about kanye west and the soul samples..... but they really do employ a different style, and 9th has been the best producer this year by far in my own opinion. little brother really does sound like a newer, fresher more skillful tribe called quest... to me, and i think that they have been a breath of freseh air to the landscape of hip hop.

and the aforementioned rjd2 has been the shining star of the underground! this guy has amazing skills when it comes to matching and layering samples... the entire def jux rosterhas turned el p into the entrepeneur of the year! this man had better be included in the sources end of year power rankings... for an underground label to explode the way his has, he is just master p for the so-called backpaker crowd. (i cant stand that term..... )and then you had talib's quality, which once you get past the initial style-shock (at first i felt like no hi tek=wack album, but in the long run i was proven wrong) and then the roots came in and messed everyones head up with phreneology. i have my complaints about this album (we all have complaints about everything, no matter how much we love it!) but dag...... they really took it to a new level this time around. and what about people like the jedi mind tricks?
kanye west and just blaze almost made rappers i cant stand (freeway and camron, the whole dipset actually) tolerable because their production is so nice.

anyhow, you have valid rants dark.... but there has been a renesance of sorts this last year that got overlooked due to us focusing on the radio juggernaught. in all honesty, the radio is becoming friendlier to other sounds, in large part due to the roc.... the door got broken down for production that wasnt party oriented to get spins, and they actually ruled hip hop as a label this year. production wise, i think that we are in very good shape, and the fact that the paty and club tracks are still the vast majority in the commercial world, and ballin and pimpin, screaming and shouting still dominate, those of us who manage to break through can honestly say that we are our own men; we will occupy our own space.

so while we had the chingys and murphy lees and (gag) bow wows and air force ones and that HORRIBLE genuine song, we had plenty of reasons to feel good about hip hop this year. 9th wonders remixes, rjd2s TRUE interpretations of old soul classics, the jedi mind tricks purist vibe.... it wasnt a bad year! and it is a very good time to be a producer.

To me boring production occurs alot in the underground also all that dark fake horror orchestra sample drum loop shit is boring as hell. Its not just commercial that gets stagnant. Underground does not=original and fresh.

I certainly agree with both of you on that. Some people tend to think that just because it's weird and on an unknown label, then it has to be real, the bomb etc etc...

Anyway, it puzzles me that my post didn't get any replies...me and Fade both thought I would be blasted with people either totally disagreeing og totally agreeing...and yet, no response...

Word Up Truth Told. I think you just mentioned the three big influences of my music at the minute! RJD2 (Deadringer is a hot album), Def Jux have got some mad new talent and Jedi Mind Tricks are simply amazing too! I just wish these artist would get some more of the exposure they deserve. It seems a shame that such talent is aways hidden from the public eye so much. It would be nice to here some Jedi Mind Tricks or Non Phixion on the radio from time to time.

I just want to say this...the industry overall is a very complex system but it has only one objective and thats to make money. Those that control the system don't give a ish about whose beat is better, whose lyrics are the best, or whose production is the tightest. They don't care if it's underground, mainstream or anything else. The bottom line is...it's all about money. As with any business, your success or failure is determined by a percentage. If, out of every 10 people you come in contact with, 7 or better wanted your product, you would be at the top of the fortune 500 list in less than a month. It wouldn't matter if you were selling bars of gold or magic markers for making ish stains in your brothers or sisters underwear...lol. So, it's not about what I like, it's not about what you like, it's all about what the majority likes.
Now for a prime example, anybody who thinks Master P was lyrically gifted has obviously suffered from a few concussions...BUT...anybody that thinks that a major part of his success wasn't based on marketing should be right beside that 1st guy in a hospital bed. I can't say it enough, "It's a MONEY thing!"

i agree there is trash both on the underground and mainstream levels, i think the problem lies with both producers and mc's copycatting, not going out to start new trends. This has to do with the labels being afraid aswell, lets just say the industry is messed.
