pad 1 is usually middle c...unless you changed the root note. just count up from there. c, c#, d, etc. that is, if that's what you meant. maybe you meant, getting it to gel without "knowing" what the notes are. in that case, it's all about what you hear (feel).
He's doing it by ear, not really by notes...he's got a good ear though. A little practice and tenacity is all it takes. I've been playing bass guitar for years and I can read sheet music but I'm much better playing by ear for some reason, then again, I've always hated playing sheet music...lol.
