Yea this is hometown right here. Skillz was reppin our area of VA hard back in the days. Him and all the super friends. Lonnie, B Danja, and Mowf etc. I had no idea Dilla did this at this time crazy! Timeless album especially for us in VA. Def a landmark. That sample is so sick how he made it into a chant.

yeah man, i only found out this was a Dilla beat when I found the video to share here. But when you listen to it now, the fingerprints are all over it. I had this album on repeat when it came out, havent heard the album for years. I remember a freestyle session on Tim Westwoods Radio 1 show, where he freestyled live while watching "Coming To America" which was on national TV, it was one of the most amazing freestyle sessions Ive ever heard. I put skillz in my top 10 for that one thing alone, was fucking hilarious and on point.

No doubt. That album Title was so fitting at that time because Va was only known for Missy whom i went to high school with and Timbaland and magoo who were from another city in the area and we weren't known for our underground hip hop which was actually huge. Skillz put the focus on cats to really emcee. that skit where he said from where??? that's how everybody viewed us when it came to underground which made me really start emceeing and making beats I began making beats in 96. thanks for this post. real nostalgic for me and as far as Dilla man he did so many tracks I wasn't aware of till I really discovered him as Slum Village. He really was a savant in terms of the beats.
