ASIO audio problems with cubase

I have a terratec dmx fire sound card with my pc and i using cubase vst32. I have been trying to adjust the latency in cubase by selecting the ASIO option for my soundcard in the audio setup box. The trouble is that whenever i try and play any other audio files or software outside of cuabse i get no sound and programs such as cool edit and fruity loops not responding no matter if cubase is closed or opened can any one help?

go to sounds and audio devices under control panel to see which device is your default sound device for windows under default sound device in the "Audio" tab. Change it, if it is not your sound card. This should fix the problem.
