theres no correct set of effects to put on a snare...if you track all your drums seperately, i would suggest some compression., but eq'ing is up to how you want the snare to sound
and how you want it to sit in the mix...

as for hi hats, i'm not sure i know what you mean... are you asking where to put it within the pattern? within the \beat as a whole?

ill need a little more explanation for that..

People do all kinds of things to get the sound they want. Me personally I like to layer my snares I usually use two different snares in a track and layer them on top of each other and play with them from there. Either pitch up or down, or eq them to my personal liking. But its always different for certain types of beats. And as far as my hi hats. I like my Hi hats to not stand out but to just compliment the drum track mainly my snares.

Yeah, it comes down to personal pref. unfortunately, even tho i know thats not the answer you rlooking for....

Personally, i like to usually drop a light reverb on my snares....I dont like to drown them, just use enough to add that lasting flavor so to speak....I tend to not use entirely "wet" reverbs since that tends to take too much focus off other drum parts in the mix, so my shits usually around the middle, like 1/2 wet, 1/2 dry, but it all depends on the snare....What i also like to do is, Gate and then EQ the snare within the reverb (this perstains to if your reverb is advanced enough to offer all these features in one unit)....See, cuz if u EQ a snare outside of the reverb, your actually eqing the snare....What im doing is EQing the reverb, so that the reverb only interacts with the given sound at the freq's i choose.....

Hope that helps a bit....

Cash also mentioned something you can do, even though, its more pertaining to tuning, which is to change the pitch of your drum sounds, ie. Snare sound...and also layer other "partner" sounds with the first snare u choose....i do this as well and it helps to add a more realistic and full character to your sounds.....

Tip: Also try a "Spring" reverb on your snare sometime....If you got a good reverb that shit is tight as fuck with the right tweeks.....

Actually, depending on the type of beat you do, you can use the hihat to give the tempo of the beat (its speed) or you can use it sparsly...

exemple: If you want, the hihat can follow the metronome. That's what in most hiphop tracks. So that would mean you would have 8 or 16 hihat hits in one pattern (separated equally...)

Some other people like to use the snare as if it was part of a beatbox... try it, you'll understand. Beatbox a beat (doesn't really matter if you're good or not, as long as you have a good drum beat) and try to recreate exactly what you're beatboxing. If you're average, chances are you cant make the hihat sound at the same time as the kick or snare, so the hihat wont play throughout the beat, but only on some spots...

example ? :http://www.beatbox.tv/

I was listening to your beats. I like the samples you found/use . Some are really sweet. That sample from "Once upon a time" is really nice... but a suggestion would be for you to try to do some structured drums... (the structure in "Twice upon a time..." is nice, simple and nice)... before thinking about effects on the different parts of your drum...

No offence, btw!

When I talk about a structured drum, I meant that you need to stick to basic drumming and, afterward, you can mix it up...

If I remember correctly, you use FLstudio... so.... try this:

In a 16 dots pattern:
Kick on 1 and 9
Snare on 5 and 13
Hihat on every odd dot (1,3,5,7...)
(as CampO said)

That's a basic structure... after, while not touching the hihat or snare, you can add (only add at first) some kicks...

After you think that you are confortable with that way of doing drum patterns, you'll be able to make some other kind of patterns (with less structure)... but, from what I heard from your beats, structured drums fit your style way better. Just dont overdo it....

And remember, that kick on the 1st dot and the 2 snare hits should stay there. It's not really a rule (cuz rules are meant to be broken anyways, of course), but if you dont put them there, it will automatically give another uncommon vibe to your beat. You can add or move snare hits or kicks to your liking...

BTW, class, god given talents is not something everybody has... I know I dont

No offense, right?
