about the MPC1000 the false rumors

Since a lot of people seem confused about the MPC1000, I thought it would be useful to post about some of the false rumors.

Rumors:

1) You can't use the MPC1000 standalone, you HAVE to use a computer with it.

>> That is simply not true.

2) You can't "chop" samples. That is, make bits and pieces of samples their own samples and assign them to pads.

>> int he TRIM screen, select any part of a sample and press EDIT > EXTRACT

3) You need to do many passes when tracking into an audio recorder because there are only 4 separate outputs

>> The 1000 has 6 analog outs (2 on the main STEREO outputs, and 4 additional ones), as well as digital IN and OUT stereo connections (S-PDIF). All these are standard.

4) It is the less powerful of all the MPCs.

>> decent effects, re-sampling, very fast rendering of WAV graphical waveform, Oh and 128MB of RAM!

5) When editing samples, you have to turn the wheel 100000 times to select large areas...

>>> SHIFT + "<" (left arrow)

this will move your cursor on the number, so you can jump by 10's, 100's, 1000s (etc) instead of 1's

Then use the wheel.

The MPC1000 is a FINE machine, even standalone - you do NOT need a computer to use it.

I love how quickly you can build music with it - I use it as a phrase sampler, laying tracks and tracks of audio phrases played on all my other sound sources (moog, scratch tt, casio toy sampler, sound modules, etc) and it's fine.

For SOME reason people overlook all these. I am almost convinced that people either:

a) never used one and assume ...

b) do not know how to use it correctly (see how most "my mpc1000 sucks" threads on here ended up being that the person needed help learning how to use it...)

WHAT THE MPC1000 IS?

1) a DRUM/PHRASE sampler (quickly smaple a drum or phrase played on an instrument ans assign to a pad)

2) a very reliable MIDI sequencer (sequence anything MIDI from external modules to software synthesizers, etc)

I owned the original 2000 & 3000, I use a 1000 now.....I find this machine much easier to work with and load samples, than messing around with diskettes and zip disks....I give the machine a 9.5.....needs time stretch and a little better tweaks with the OS and its unstoppable...

Man i have an MPC 2000xl and i have messed with an mpc 1000 on a number of occasions.

Im not tryin to start and agrument hear casue the 1000 is a great machine, but that baby was ment to be used with software

Key funtions like timestrech, autochomatic assgiment(<--very,very,very important) and, zoning were left out becasue the desginers assumed that the user would be using software with the machine. (also thats why the price is lower)

Now of course you can find work arounds. u can do that with almost anything, but trust me , when u chop samples etc... on the 2000xl and then u try and do it on the 1000 there is a BIGG differnce.

Most of the time people who use the 1000 swear by it becasue they have never used a 2xl or a 4000 before. But i gurantee if you try out an XL of a 4000 and do sample editing u will see what people mean when they say that the 1000 was ment to be used with software.

Now besides sample editing the machines are viturally indentical and the 1000 is more powerful(more ram etc..)

My 2 cents

but you can do all that with the 1000 it just takes time to figure out and i hear you that might be cause there is 1000 price difference at least between the 1000 and the other mpc models

Again i aint tryin to argue but naww dog ur misinformed....

THe MPC 10000 standalone features

*Timestreach*--no, u need software

*zoning*
kinda, u have to use it manually but its not nearly as easy as the xl. On the xl u can predefine zone sizes etc.. Its much easier and alot less time consuming. (trust me ive done it on both.) ALso once something is autmoaticlly zoned, it creates a program for you with the chopped sample ready to go.With the 1000 u have to sit there an manually edit zones, and manually assign them to a program this is where software via 1000 comes in. YOu chop it in soundforge or audtion and send it to the MPC via USB or CF card.

*autochormatic assigment*-
now to me this is one of the most important features that my mpc 2xl offers. It allows me to take a sample create a program and spread it accross the keys and play it like a VST or a soundmoudle voice. This is how i create viturally all my basslines(as well as various other instraments i sample)
The 1000 fails MISERABLEY at this. You would have to sit there and manually edit the sample and pitch it up or down for EACH note on the keyboard to fit it accross the keys. This is VERY impratical. The 2xl and 4000 can do this in less then 1 second.

Again im not trying to deter you from ur 1000 casue its a great machine, but i want u to realise that the 1000 wasent created to be standlone, u can go to the aka site and see that. Also the 1000 is NOT a replacemnt for the 2xl. As far as key features are concered, the 1000 standalone is lesser machine thats why it was ment for software....

FYI there is a reason why MPC 1000's are going so cheap on EBAY, people are buying them expecting to do the same thing they could do with a 2000xl or 4000(without software) and thats simply not the case

My 2 cents

I use the machine exactly like that, I am tempted to get a 4000 but.....I think for what I do it can be done here, but I use soundforge with it, and it works exactly like I want like you said Classic, but its more a marketing thing, because on the real this piece can be expanded to be modified thru the OS if they wanted to, but it would be in the same class as the XL I am waiting for the upgrade with the zones and timestretch that have already been discussed....I never owned the XL but I had a fully loaded 2000 but the 3000 didnt even have all of the feature the 2000 did so in between wanting a better machine to work with I copped 1000..oh I do sort of miss my 8 outs but I just print from my mixer 2 channels and my MiX is soooo much better compared to when I had the 3000 and was dumping 8X out

YEa like you said its a marketing thing, but i doubt it will happen, casue they are still making money off the XL, thats why they realised the new blue vesrion with the CF card(even though its the exact same thing) It all comes down to money, if u want the extra features , you pay more money.

Ive been hearing about these 1000 upgrades for a long time, they were being discuess when i first started producing in dec 2003 and was looking to by an MPC. i even called akai and they gave me the run around. I seriously doubt this will happen casue its bad business.....

the 1000 does what it says on the tin. i think time stretch would make it one of the best machines around. i think the usb slot misguides people into thinkin that it should be used wit software, but it doesnt.
