OK, I just bought my mpc 2000xl and im working through the manual. Im at the stage where i can sample from my turntables, assign the samples to pads, fiddle with the filter/decay/attack/tuning of the sample and play the pads. (i havnt got into sequencing and stuff yet)

I just learned how to use the 16 levels function. I programed a 4 second piano stab over the 16 pads. My problem was that the lowest note was 4 seconds long but as i pressed higher notes, the sample became shorter.

I want the sample to be 4 seconds long no matter how high or low the note is. Is this where time-stretching comes into play?

advice is much apreciated

cheers

if im thinking about the same thing you are then i just mess with the pitch in soundforge, using the Preserve Duration option....then export em to the mpc via floppy

Intresting formula
If you want to time-stretch or compress a sound so that it will stay the same length but play at a different pitch you need to get out your scientific calculator. First take the pitch difference you're aiming for in semitones, then divide it by 12. Press 2 on your calculator followed by the x^y button, then the number you just came up with. This will give you the necessary compression value (if you want the pitch lower) or stretch value (if you want the pitch higher). Time-stretch or -compress the sample with this value, then play at the required new pitch. You should find it's the same length it was originally.

its the long way but it works great.

This may sound a little simplictic but try working from the high end down and then resampling the lower notes to 4 secs. The mpc is automactically changing the lenghts as you change the pitch or you can use the fomula as light said.

i chose the pad first. i thought you HAD to do that. and then once it is assigned to a pad you can press 16 levels.

eagerly awaiting reply

(the formula which light posted sounds good but i dont have a scientific calculator so i was looking for a simpler way, hope you can give it to me)
