My recent remix of The Godfathers (Kool G Rap + Necro) 'The City'.

I like the beat. its super ethereal sounding, I'll be damned if it sounds like the opposite of what necro would be on.

I agree with fade, the drums could knock a little harder. I also think the kicks get a bit repetitive. I think the third repeat could be replaced with something else.
I'd also like to see something to elevate the hook portion to go along with the elevated cadence in the vocals.

Otherwise pretty dope beat you got there.

Posted this in the old showcase without the lyric video but got no response, so I'mma post it again. Full song, I did the beat and the vocals. I also made the lyric video, and because its all hand animated it took me north of 30 hours to make and I would rather shoot myself than do it again.

Thanks for the feedback @Fade and @iDeaLoGiK .

Cool lyric video. Digging the hard drums and the horns but I think the piano sounds a tad too synthetic vs the rest, perhaps adding some delay might help.

@iDeaLoGiK Nice! I agree the piano is a bit too synthy but it does sit nicely in the mix. Good tune though, and yeah that doesn't sound like fun doing all that work on the video. Video editing is so time consuming.

not just video editing. I keyframe animated everything.

@iDeaLoGiK The video is dope, I think the work paid off. Time syncing is a pain in the arse, so is any animation, but time syncing in particular is a cunt.
I agree that the piano sounds very synthetic, becomes very noticeable at the very end. Bass guitar sounds good. Brass is a little synthetic, Id stick some reverb on the piano and brass. I think the vocal could come up a little more upfront, some of the words are getting masked by the brass and piano. Only a couple moments where you crammed too many syllables into the space, but I would highly consider rewriting parts where you have to rush words in to make it fit, sounds awkward IMO. But apart from that, I like it.

@DJ Excellence I think the snare is a little underwhelming, it sounds a little thin and could do with a bit of body in the low end. Same with the bass, seems a little lacking in the meat of the low end. I really like the pella, it fits the beat well. I think you could do more layers on the hook that compliment the pella and add extra energy to the hook. Also consider adding well placed drum variations that enhance certain phrases and make the words stand out. Dope remix, but a bit repetitive, I think the changes I suggested would fix that, but thats just my opinion.

@DJ Excellence

Very cool ambient vibes going on here with the beat. Drums match the flow/rhythm of the lyrics. While I find you remixes do a great job of matching the overal vibe of the original track, I thought this one was a tad bit off the mark...until the chorus. Well mixed, interesting, different but has all the hallmarks of a traditional hip-hop beat.

@iDeaLoGiK

Love that opening bass riff. To my ears, I feel like it may be missing some space. A very subtle reverb or slightly moving filter would do a lot to brighten it up a bit. I'm of a sucker for horns so I was hooked once they came in. The pianos doubling and extrapolating the bass line is very clever and does a lot to add dimension to whole beat. It's hard to tell witht he vocals, but I think there needs to be a bit more glue for the instrumental. Reverb, slight compression. I won't comment on the lyrical content, but the flow is wild!

Between work and travel; I've been in something of a creative rut.

I find writers block is always a good time to do some "studies" and explore the minute details of music you like in the hopes you A) learn something B) get inspired. So, I decided to listen to some older Neptunes music and took notes on what their hallmarks are:

  1. Simple bass guitars - used as a sonic anchor and to accent down beats
  2. "Fake" guitars - staccato, minor 7ths with a syncopated rhythm
  3. Big drums - Sizzling claps & Boomy kicks
  4. Interesting percussion
  5. Synths
  6. Subtle movement (FX, Filters, faint delays) on pads to give them a living, breathing feel
Let me know how I did and what you think of the beat.

Thanks,
