I made an intro post and titled it "checking in", then got earwormed by the simpsons so I had to sample it (little known fact, sampling exorcises earworm in 80-85% of cases, second in effectiveness only to decapitation.)

Not expecting serious feedback - it was just a quick bodge job for fun I made on the sampler I'm still figuring out and thought it just about worth sharing in case anyone else might get a similar kick out of it.

Future submissions may or may not be more serial.

(Edit: I'm also currently without my monitors so the mix may be most terrible - apologies)

@DJ Excellence This is a dope remix, it has a vibe. Might want to clean up the bass a little, cut some mud and a little boom, and tighten it up with some compression, its slightly overbearing. Have you sidechained your kick and bass? That could help clean it up too. Really enjoying listening to this for the third time.

@SHEP I think with some careful time stretching you can make the singing vocal and chopped samples sit much better and work much better with the beat. You are onto something with the idea, and I think with some more careful and deliberate placement of the chops and vocals this could be a banger. You are right about the mix, its really hard to get a decent mix when you cant hear the frequencies you are supposed to be mixing. How long have you been making beats? Whats your current set up?

Before I added the 9 Seconds parts to my beat for the battle that final I did a Snoop Dogg Remix, let me know what you think..

Was going to post some beats that didnt make it into the battle that but might just hold them for the battles coming up.

is nice,

I think there's a bit of crowding in the lower mids, probably a few instruments (or maybe one offender), that could do with a bunch of its low mids pulled out. Feels a bit overpopulated.

Vocal level is right, but i think gets a bit masked by the above^

Still good tho!

Thanks for listening and sharing your thoughts! As much I'd love to make those changes, and hear a tighter version, it would require starting over as I made with a kind of one-way street resampling workflow, but alas the moment has gone... maybe one day it will return.

I've been making shit much longer that what you just heard would suggest haha somewhere around the 15 year mark all in all, although not consistently. Most of the time I've just been working with laptop and instruments, I tried learning to sample at the start then drifted away from it (I think I just wasn't enjoying it on the computer), although continued some aspects of it - chopping, looping, arranging instrumental recordings - but I was always starting with something and jamming along, it was always easy time/key wise so I never really developed that side of it.

A few weeks ago I picked up a second-hand 404mk2 (I was looking for an older one assuming they would be cheaper but then found a mk2 for less than any of the OGs or SXs were going for), so I am now trying to get to grips with that and having a very fun and frustrating time - its been a revolutionary time in my music making but a lot of steep learning too! I'll be sure to get something less ludicrous and more crafted out to y'all soon.

And yo that Snoop remix bumps! I like the mix of dirty/fuzzy and clean/smooth textures and the energy/dynamics/momentum carries Snoop very effectively.

I layered a bass under the kick to give it a bit more welly. I think thats the sound you are talking about.

possibly - I had wondered.

But yeah, it's good work, as usual - I'm being more critique focussed with you as I think you're of the level here it'd be more beneficial for these surgical analysis as opposed to me just going 'yeah bruv, it's dope'. Maybe. - but also try to be clear i too think it's good

It's cool bro, that's exactly the type of feedback I'm after. After listening to something on loop for hours on end it's easy to miss things, ear fatigue and all that. Can never have enough ears IMO.

Getting a lot better at this, as im referencing slightly better now too. VSX really helps.
I listeened to a couple of beat demos I sent a sing the other day (sent them like a year ago), now, they were only fresh from the beat kitchen, no proper mixing, but usually production mix will be acceptable; lord. they were so poor compared to my standards now. I don't think i would have noticed it that much before; interestingly i tried doing a quick mix of it tho, and a struggle to fix the issue - so maybe a production issue that i wouldn't miss now, thanks to better monitoring/ears/experience.

I have a beat I made for the battle that but the kick is weak as fuck, tried many mixing methods to fix it, but the fix needs to be done in production, replace the kick completely and start the mix fresh. Tried everything but nothing works, so fuck it, I'm ditching that kick, might showcase next week after I've fixed it.

yeah man. it's surprising them ones --- because you know every technique how to make that kick right, but the kick just says 'nooooooo brav'

The thing with the beat i was talking about, the musical idea is really good, i like it, and the vibe is right, but the sound is what's making the vibe. But I will have to replace them to make it work as a mix, will have to pretty much make it from scratch soundwise, the whole compo. And i'll be honest, I'd rather night. Might give it one quick go sometime, if that dont work, it's dead to me.

Defo, sometimes if something is too much hard work to fix, just move on without missing a beat, better to make another 2 bangers better than the one you are trying to "fix" in the same amount of time. When you don't have @Armani time, then you have to use that shit wisely.
