It's been a while since I've used the MPC so I decided to dust it off. This was a new work a workflow I haven't used before and it was a lot of fun.
I had some drums on the CF card that came from the previous owner. Started with a simple drum pattern then thought "where can I go with this?"
Instead of tracking out to Logic or re-sampling into Maschine, I just flipped open my laptop and fired up Kontakt. A simple Y cable from the headphones out to the Record In of the MPC and I was ready to pull whatever sounds I wanted.
Sampling short stabs and licks without worry about MIDI, quantization or grids was incredibly liberating. It also helps to get that collage feel of old school boom bap where you're piecing together samples from a variety of sources.
Tracked everything back into Logic for a simple mix, arranging and extra FX.
