I don't do Social Media but I started to follow (using a RSS-fees) a few Hip Hop blogs were they actually talk about music and I found tons of artists and albums that I personally enjoy in a few weeks.

For more mainstream stuff, this site does the whole "if you like X, you might like Y" thing.

I hear about new artists or music from the DJ pool that I'm in or I find some underground hiphop spot and check out unsigned artists perform and most of the time the DJ plays all kinds of new music underground bangers
