    Tips on Transitioning

Sounds like you're focusing on the arrangement aspect. Don't forget the written. Chord progressions can play a part. New chords, change key, modulate from major to minor, etc. Also when working the arrangement, don't forget about substituting sounds in addition to bringing sounds in/out.

    Weak drums

Make sure you're understanding the context. A break off the original record isn't layered. It's mixed to fit a genre at a point in time. Depending on the genre & time you might hear more/less room mics, more/less overhead mics, tighter/looser skins, dampened kits, high-end roll off, tape...

10 Reasons Iranian Rap is Way better than American Rap .

Ha! American TV/Radio is not representative of American music, especially Hip Hop. The aim of the typical artist and those that control the media & marketing of Hip Hop are vastly different. Sounds like you're only experiencing commercialized American Hip Hop. You likely won't relate to or like...

Also try using references. Find a few songs similar to what you're aiming for and add them to your check list.

    Showcase - February 12-18, 2018

Good stuff folks, especially @dBtheProducer , @Klypse & @Johni Cleveland. That's my speed. @Johni Cleveland came extra funky plus the performance to put it over the top.

    Studio Monitors

Still on my first ever set, Alesis M1 Active MKII, 6.5" woofer. I'll upgrade to an 8" woofer at some point. Been eyeing the Yamaha HS8. Anyone care to share knowledge on bass response comparison between 6" and 8" woofers? 8" seems to get an extra 8-10 Hz. Significant?

Production In The Lab: Are You Afraid To Sample?

Great article! I'd bet that 99.5% of my favorite Hip Hop songs have samples in them. Despite that, I never understood why producers feel entitled. IMO, until you make that sample unrecognizable, it's not yours. Pay, move on, or take your chances/lumps. It's someone else's music despite how Hip...

    Post your favorite digging spot!

I dig more for records to listen to. Sampling, when I do partake, is a byproduct.

How to get OLDSCHOOL sounding BASS?

Monark has been a good stand in for my Moog Minitaur. It's in their Select bundle ($200, free with most of their hardware). But any decent mono synth with a few oscillators should get you there.

Which VST plugin for hiphop bass you use?

Scarbee Pre & J Basses and Monark(replacing my Moog Minitaur). I've been wanting Trilian, but the CPU drain scares me.

    Which DAW do you use?

Logic Pro X (soon to be 10.4) and MPC 2.0. I jumped from Pro Tools to Logic because I felt Logic was more conducive to creating, where Pro Tools felt better when mixing. I was on Pro Tools 8.X, so I would be unaware of any features added since then. Though some of Logic's mixing features are...

    Native Instruments Maschine MK3

Came down to the MK3 and MPC Touch for me. I went with the Touch because the screen was more useful for my purposes, and I had at least some experience with the MPC workflow. But the MK3 looks like a nice piece of equipment, especially since I use a lot of NI instruments. Took a lot not to grab...

How to get OLDSCHOOL sounding BASS?

Low pass filter & a touch of distortion on a sine wave, electric bass sample or real electric bass/VI works for me every time.

    Metronome... Use it or not?

Like some have said, metronome on to record 1st track, typically drums for me. After that, the drums serve as my metronome.

This groove is tight! For my personal preference, I'd like to hear more change ups and more punch in the drums.

    What's Happening, Ill?

I started recording in '04, and got serious around '07, so any time after that. My tag would've been the same, or maybe BezowinZ.

    What's Happening, Ill?

Poking around on the net looking for places to discover & share music info brought me here. The name of the site is very familiar, so I may have been a member some years ago. Any way... I write & produce Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae & Rock music, but I'm coming off a 3 year hiatus. I'm taking this time...
